I Had My Mexican Housewarming

January 24, 2012 | Filed under Family & Friends, Food, Q.O.T.W.

…on the weekend, and it was a success in as far as that more people than I expected attending, thus suggesting that I have more friends and acquaintances in Sydney than I originally thought. For those playing along at home, I ended up providing ingredients for “make your own burrito” (lettuce, diced tomato, rice spiced with Mexican chilli powder, grilled chicken, and marinated capsicum) as well as a side of nachos with salsa and guacamole. Sangria, Coronas and margaritas were the drinks of the day. The food was quite well received, though I did overcater as is my wont and will have leftovers for the next week.

More importantly than the housewarming itself though, is the fact that I am a matchmaker. One couple that I put together a few years ago is now engaged, a second couple is dating after a long period of only being close friends, and a third potential couple emerged at my housewarming when a friend from my study break in China in 2006/2007 ended up going home with a friend of a friend. I have it on good authority that they were having lunch together the next day, suggesting that the “going home together that night” didn’t result in a “sneaking out the door before the other person wakes up”. It’ll be interesting to see if it morphs into “we need to name our first born after Amanda for bringing us together”. I think those successes far outweigh my previous attempt to bring two people together, only for him to be unable to perform at the last hurdle. Or my attempt to set my current boyfriend up with someone else two or three years ago.

Question of the Week: Have you ever been as meddlesome as me in attempting to matchmake, and how did it turn out?

  1. Glad your mexican themed party was a hit!! I’ll bet everyone had fun :D
I have tried to play Cupid, and have failed miserably. Each and every time. It works out great at first, but long term I’m just not good at seeing into the future. So, I guess if you’re looking for a 6 month relationship, I’m the gal to speak to! And if you want a long term, happily ever after…speak to Amanda lol. :P

  2. I have absolutely no comment on either of your failed attempts at matchmaking. None.

  3. LOL. Sounds like you had more of a Tex-Mex housewarming theme than full-blown Mexican.

  5. I set two of my friends up, but I knew that relationship was doomed from the start. He just wanted someone to put his diddle in, and she falls in love with anyone who pays her attention.

As bad as I feel about it, he wouldn’t stop hounding me about her until I introduced them to each other, so I didn’t have much of a choice. I did warn her though. Eh.

I could really go for some sangria now.

  6. If they have twins, surely they will be called Amanda and Alexandra? it only seems fair! :D

I have never set any friends up…Mainly due to my lack of decent single male friends. Perhaps I can borrow your services?

  8. I never set anyone up. I’m always way too scared to meddle in people’s lives. I’m glad you have been successful, though! Someone has to be the one to do it! I’m glad your party went well, too!
