What An Amazing Holiday; My Life Sucks
October 31, 2011 | Filed under Travel
About twenty hours ago, I stepped off a plane in Sydney after nearly two days in transit which involved:
- 4 hours of waiting for a delayed flight in LA
- 26 hours of feeling nauseous on four different flights
- 8 hours of sleeping in a drafty corner of Beijing airport
- 1 hour of panicking about Qantas’s suspended services and trying to figure out how I would get from Melbourne to Sydney in time for work the next day
- 5 hours of spending time with my parents in Melbourne with a Yum Cha lunch and cuddling Mr Darcy
I am now at work, and not ready to be back at work. I am also broke and actually in debt. Suffice it to say that the letting agent still has not managed to find a tenant for my apartment, so I am actually $4000 in rental income down from what I expected to be at this point in time. This obviously has a flow on effect – I don’t know if I can pay my $2700 odd tax bill, or pay my parents back in a timely manner (they paid some bills for me that were due when I was away), or have enough money to put down a deposit down on a rental in Sydney (which I still haven’t found, because no one wants me as a tenant), and I won’t be able to make future payments on my mortgage and have to ask the bank to draw temporarily from the additional payments I had made up to this point.
I had an amazing vacation, which I will write about on here at some point, but I feel like I’ve come back to nothing but stress.

I can’t believe you had all these problems but I can definitely relate to airline problems being stuck in Sydney with no accommodation for the disaster with the ash cloud and it stinks. I am glad you’re through it all now and your actual vacation was awesome. I can’t wait to hear about it all!

The memories you’ve just formed should definitely be worth it, right? :-) As long as you’ve got a stable job, I think you’ll be just fine. You’ll get back up on your feet again. Besides, everyone knows that this vacation you had was EXPENSIVE. I would be more surprised if you didn’t get into debt.
Can’t wait to read more!!!

I’m glad your vacation was amazing! Sucks that you’re in debt, though. Hopefully the letting agent will find someone for your apt real soon.

Oh man, that would be stressful, I’m sorry you’re having a tough time =( Glad you had a good vacation, and hope things will turn around for you soon!

Dam, I felt guilty FOR you just reading that! BUT… We all know you can save and look at it this way, I’ve been paying rent and living off less than $300 a week and I’m FINE! :P I have plenty of books if you would like to borrow some, and even a camera, it will save on entertainment costs. Other than that I can recommend shopping at markets (I got 2 kg of premium beef mince from the Preston Market for $10 unlike 1kg for $12 from a supermarket). I know a few really good cash-saver recipes too but I’m guessing your pretty well versed in things like that.

Wait a minute, didn’t you say that your net worth was more than $100K?
Reply: Net worth =/= accessible cash. I don’t know if you’ll understand the distinction though, I know Americans aren’t big on personal finance. BOOM generalisation!
