Mr. Impossibly Tall Kiwi Man

June 13, 2011 | Filed under Life, Money

So, Mr. Swedish Blond Male Future Doctor moved out this weekend, and I have Mr. Impossibly Tall Kiwi Man moving in tomorrow. There’s an ongoing theme here of foreign men looking for short-term arrangements…which possibly says something about the way that I screen potential housemates.

It suits me well as it does make things a lot easier financially, while also ensuring that if the housemate is crap, I’m not actually stuck with them for any extended period of time. I’ve increased the rent by $10 a week this time, so I’m charging Mr. Impossibly Tall Kiwi Man $190 per week for my second bedroom. He expects to move out in the second week of July (that’s when his partner moves to Australia to join him), so I’ll get $800 by the end of his stay. If his partner stays as well, I’d be happy to jack the price up to $230 per week for the two of them on a temporary basis until they find their own place. I don’t want to live with a couple for a permanent arrangement though.

That money that will go nicely towards my trip to America as doing a rough budget has suggested that I will need $5000 for the month, especially if I do the shopping I intend to do. I could shop less of course, and get by with a budget of $3500 for all the inter-city travel, accommodation, sight-seeing and eating…but I think we all know that that’s really not an option. If I’m there, there will be shopping!

  1. I love the names you give your short-term housemates and for a second, I thought Mr Impossibly Tall Kiwi Man was gay, for some reason. :\

When I read the title, I immediately thought of my friend who likes tall guys, lol.

  2. If he can fit in your door frames with minimal hunching, he’s not that tall!

  3. @Maggie: That’s also what I figured (and he still might be!) because I only ever see the word partner associated with same-sex couples.

  4. @Emsz the ladies in my hockey team were discussing this once… the general consensus was that, past a certain age + seriousness, they like to say “partner” so its like a step up from “boy/girlfriend”, but not quite married, haha.

Where do you manage to find all these foreign men, Amanda? Well, kiwi man isn’t foreign to me, but y’know what I mean. Also, are you going to be renting a car in the states or using public transport? I had finally figured out how to best navigate via public transport and the couple of days I had a car… but if you’re renting a car for a month, you can end up getting it super cheap. I think mum might’ve paid only around $20 a day.

  5. Do these guys require the words “male” and “man” in their respective titles when they already possess the salutation of “Mr.” ? :P

  7. I am so excited about your trip to the US! Also, major kudos on finding roommates with steady income who aren’t lunatics. Hopefully that trend continues for you. =)
