Unromantic French Provincial Getaway

I spent yesterday driving between three towns in the Gippsland region of country Victoria for a work-related information-gathering trip. It is a beautiful part of the state – lots of rolling green hills, productive arable land, cows1 and lambs at pasture, dramatic coal mines and small creeks and rivers. What you see in the back roads when you get off the main highway is what I imagine Australia would have looked like a hundred years ago – just farmland or grazing pastures with an occasional farmhouse dotted along the road.
As I spent about six hours on the road (in between the meetings I’d arranged), I wasn’t going to attempt to spend three hours driving back to Melbourne at twilight. My manager would have prevented me from doing so anyway – we have a policy against staff members driving any more than five hours per day. It’s a risk management policy about driver fatigue. So, I booked myself a room at a bed and breakfast.

Ideally in such French provincial styled surroundings I should be making sweet sweet love with a impoverished artist who works at the local boulangerie. I should have a glass of Bordeaux wine and a crusty baguette in hand. Instead, I spent the night working on an essay that’s due next week, and watching Masterchef and the first of Oprah’s farewell episodes. Oh well. Take what you can get.
1 P.S. Did you know playing Hey Cow! isn’t nearly as fun when you’re playing it alone?

Oh my gosh, that B&B looks so cute! The decor in the Dalfruin Suite is the kind of style I wish my room were in. Sounds like you had a pretty little country adventure :)

Ooooh, I love the colour scheme of the B&B! At least you did your essay in style? :)
