About a month after I moved in to my apartment, I made the decision to pull out the dishwasher and put it into storage as it wasn’t working. Note – when you buy a property, insist on: a) running a load through the dishwasher; b) taking a shower; c) going to the toilet; and d) cooking a meal; before buying. Just because the seller says things are working and functional, doesn’t mean that they’re working the way you want them to. You don’t want to buy a place unless you know the water pressure in the shower is to your liking, or where the stove doesn’t accommodate your cooking.
Ahem. Tangent over. Anyway, I pulled out the dishwasher, and was left with a big gaping hole where it was. It actually came in handy when I got Darcy, as it gave me a space where I could put his food and water without it getting underfoot. He also prefers eating in a ‘cave’ like space. For six months though, I’ve been trying to come up with a perfect spot for my microwave. I don’t have a lot of bench space at the best of times, and every little bit counts. Then I hit upon this solution:

Using one of the tables purchased from Ikea (I’ve done some rearranging of the living room since this post). It’s just such an excellent use of space, as I now have more bench space to work with in the kitchen, Darcy still has his cave for his food, and the microwave is easily accessible but out of the way. I couldn’t tell you now how much I’ve spent in stocking my kitchen with applicances, utensils, crockery, cutlery, etc. – the set of Global knives alone were about $300AUD (on sale, normally about $500AUD), but they’re real top quality lifetime guarantee knives. All up, I could have spent up to $1000AUD – maybe even $1500AUD.
Anyway, sometimes my ingenuity just blows me away. Of course, you could argue that I’m in fact remarkably dim for only coming up with this solution now, rather than months ago. But I’m just going to continue to convince myself of my ingenuity.

That’s a perfect solution – and it completely fits in with the look rest of the kitchen (well, except for the striking red).
Great tips for things to test before buying a place. I’m curious – did you actually do all of these or are they the wise words of hindsight?
Reply: Ah, hindsight…everything else has worked out well (e.g. water pressure), but the dishwasher was disappointing! Thing is, I don’t wash enough dishes to make it worthwhile to buy a new dishwasher, but it sure would come in handy when I’m feeling lazy!

Great solution! But like Ruth said, different colour required!
Although, my entire house is mis-matched so I can’t really say anything :)
The kitchen itself is lovely.

That is really clever! And I love the idea of Darcy having a little cave to eat in, haha. I’ve found that cats enjoy being under things. My cats definitely find that really comforting. :D Hank will go out of his way to walk under chairs or tables, even if they’re not en route to wherever he’s going.
The kitchen looks great, by the way! Really clean and nice.

We use our dishwasher to store clean dishes and pots. =P

well it’s gotta be better than my friend’s idea which is her microwave on a rolling wheel high chair (baby is not a baby anymore) and she wheels it into the kitchen when needed!
Doesn’t bending down to the microwave annoying though or do you not use it as often?
just wanted to point out it also isn’t very child safe but then you don’t have children yet :p
