Arnotts Family Assorted

As any good Australian will know, Arnotts Family Assorted is the biscuit pack of choice when it comes to large gatherings. Arnotts have been around for over a century, and they show no sign of losing popularity any time soon. As with all variety packs however, there’s a crowd favourite, and a runt of the litter. You get the following biscuits in the pack:

  1. Milk Arrowroot
  2. Butternut Snap
  3. Chocolate Ripple
  4. Milk Coffee
  5. Teddy Bear
  6. Scotch Finger

Based on months of observation at various workplaces, I can now tell you what works, and what doesn’t. I run workshops and meetings regularly, and always have a pack of Family Assorted for snacks. The same biscuits always go first, and the same ones are always left behind.

Chocolate Ripple always goes first, followed by Butternut Snap and Scotch Finger. The Milk Arrowroot, Milk Coffee and Teddy Bears are left to linger in the pack, untouched. The problem is of course, that the Milk Arrowroot, Milk Coffee and Teddy Bears are all essentially the same biscuit – simply created in different shapes. They’re great to dunk in a mug of hot chocolate, but otherwise taste bland and boring. Chocolate Ripple, Butternut Snap and Scotch Finger however, work well either by themselves, OR dunked in a hot beverage. How can you expect the boring three varieties to compare?

Question of the Week: If you’re an Arnotts connoisseur, which of the Family Assorted is your favourite? If you’ve not been lucky enough to have Arnotts, what’s your favourite biscuit?

  1. I’m not really sure what the American equivalent of a biscuit is.

  2. @Jennifer: Biscuit = cookie. American biscuit = scone. :P

Being the fatty I am, I don’t care what kind of biscuit it is, as long as it’s a biscuit. I will eat whatever no one else does! Haha.

But chocolate Scotch Fingers are definitely my favourite. :)

  3. I actually quite like Arrowroots, as long as they’re the crisp ones (I think they are in the red pack, as opposed to the white…or is it the other way around?) rather than the thicker, gluggier ones.

Fave is probably the scotch finger, or anything choc. I’m also a fan of choc digestives and Shrewsburys.

  4. Am I allowed to say timtams? They’re made by Arnott’s, right? ;)

  5. I haven’t actually eaten Arnott’s biscuits at home in years (except for non-Arnotts branded biscuits that they also own, like Shapes). Dad mostly boycotts their products because of their immoral business practices. However, none of us can resist Shapes, so we let that slide… (we’re not very good at boycotting, I know!)

Anyway, I have eaten Arnott’s Family Assortment elsewhere, and my favourites actually are the “bland” ones like Milk Coffee. Not that I like it particularly, I just like the “not bland” ones even less!

  6. Scotch finger all the way!

  7. The same thing happens here in the UK, and if and when you find someone who likes all the ones you don’t you keep all of them aside and give them to that person when you see them.

I like chocolate digestives, boring but available pretty much everywhere.

  8. I’m just tickled that you call those tasty things biscuits. I guess I’m pretty pureblood American when I say that my favorite is home made chocolate chip. Ohhh, heck yes.

  9. I love Royal Dansk Butter Cookies. So amazingly amazing… And shortbread cookies. But homemade oatmeal chocolate chip cookies just can never be beat. Ever.

Oh and just to make the whole terminology business more complicated, I also love animal crackers. Which are really cookies. Which you all refer to as biscuits.

  12. Blasphemy woman! Milk Arrowroot, Milk Coffee and Teddy Bears are NOT the same biscuit!

My favourite out of them all would be Milk Coffee… choc ripple kills ur teeth, good when smashed up as a base of cheesecake, same with butternut snap…

Scotch finger is good with tea because it’s so buttery it just melts in your mouth – it essentially leaves a sticky feeling… typical shortbread

Arrowroot has a wheaty taste/texture to it.. I personally don’t like it. And teddy bear is just your basic generic biscuit (that’s why there’s a choc version of it)… milk coffee has a certain smoothness that none of the others have…

perhaps my palette is a bit more sensitive than others…
