Up Shit Creek Without A Paddle

August 28, 2009 | Filed under Uni/Work

After weeks of speculation and gossip inbetween various stores, the baby goods company I work for has gone into receivership today, and all their stores are likely to close next week.

I’m not familiar with the legal procedures of receivership, but for those of us who work there, it basically means that we’re up shit creek without a paddle. Granted, it’s not so bad for me – I have another job, and my job at the baby store was really money I saved, rather than money I needed to live on. Financially, I’ll do fine without the job. It might even be good for me to have some time off where I don’t have to work six or seven days a week.

I feel sorry for the other ladies who worked at the store though. The manager needs her salary to pay her and her husband’s mortgage. The 2IC has been with the company for thirty years and has lost all her long service leave. The other casual needs her twenty hours a week to put food on her table and clothes on her kids’ backs. And these are just the employees from one store – what about the other half a dozen in the state, and two dozen around Australia?

I saw the writing on the wall a few weeks back, and have been applying for jobs in the past week. The plan now is to keep going with my job in disability (three days a week), and to continue looking for another job in the human services field – preferably in community not-for-profit, but I recognise that I can’t really be picky. If within a month I can’t find anything in the field, I’ll return to retail or basic administration which with my experience I wouldn’t have trouble finding a job in.

It’s just a damn shame that this has happened. I do love working with pregnant women and babies – if I could find a role in a community Maternal and Child Health clinic, that would be ideal. Ah well, back to the job hunt!

  1. Good luck finding a new job. Times are tough, Justin still hasn’t managed. In his area of expertise (industrial printing and driving) people are only firing or closing up shop so there’s so few jobs and huge amounts of competition. :(

  2. Geez, good luck. The economic situation is pretty bad everywhere and jobs are really, really hard to come by. I’ve been struggling myself since I graduated college last June to find a job and I’ve so far had 0 opportunities that have called me back for an interview. Only one was nice enough to send me an “Sorry, we’re not looking to move forward with you at this time,” email. It’s a hard knocks life. :(

  3. That’s really horrible. It’s so hard to find a good reliable job at the best of times. I was told today my store will be closing in 4 weeks…But im lucky enough to be shipped off to a store close by.

  4. Oh sad, that seemed like a really nice place to work. I hope those other ladies (and you!) find something else soon.

  6. That’s such a shame. I’m sure you’ll have no problem finding another job (and luckily you have another) but I’m sorry for the other workers there. Good luck finding another job.
