July 23 2009: Surprise Fanfiction
Below you’ll see a screenshot I took of a data folder on my brother’s computer.
He’s writing Harry Potter fanfiction and I didn’t even know it. The only reason I even found out about it is because I used his computer today to print something out quickly so I didn’t have to turn my laptop on for five minutes, and did some snooping (largely to make sure he’s not doing anything stupid like downloading porn with viruses attached – porn without viruses is fine!) in his files.
There appears to be twenty-one chapters of his fanfiction, with each chapter consisting of about six hundred words each. Would anyone be interested in reading it if I was to purloin his work and post it here over a number of days?

Don’t do it. He’s entitled to his privacy. If he wanted his work on the web, he can upload it himself, no?
Jem on July 23 2009 #
Agreeing with Jem here. If he wanted to share it, it would be uploaded already. Maybe it already is uploaded somewhere, and you just haven’t found it.
Interesting that he’s writing about Voldemort though.

I agree with Jem. If my sister stole some of my stories from my computer and posted them on the Internet for all to see, I’d feel terribly betrayed. My files and my creations are mine to publish (or withhold) as I see fit. For similar reasons, I don’t read the stories my sister writes unless she gives me permission to, even though she leaves her computer logged in and unattended all the time. I trust her not to be writing terrorist plans or anything of that ilk, and in that case, what reason have I to betray her trust like that?
If your brother wouldn’t mind having his story published on your blog, then ask him and get his permission before doing so. Otherwise, I don’t think you should.

I concur with Jem and Jessica; pinching his stuff would be a pretty low act.
Snooping around in itself was pretty dodgy. And your excuse was flimsy at best :P
If you can snag permission I’d be interested in reading it, but you might find he’s pretty upset for you reading it on your own to begin with.

I’m glad the first three commenters beat me to the punch.

I agree with the above. Seems HP fanfic runs in the family. Did you enjoy his stories?
Skye on July 23 2009 #
yeah, as a fellow fanfiction writer I agree with the privacy thing. encourage him to post them to FictionAlley (or other archives) or LJ if he’s interested, though. *wants to see too* :)

Is it slash? Otherwise, pfft :P.

I’m with everyone else. I used to share my computer with Dad, and we probably had no privacy from each other. I shudder to think of the stuff he found in my files if he ever perused through it. And if I found out he was publishing my stuff without my consent . . . let’s just say I’d probably bash the monitor on his head or something just as drastic!
And I wonder what kind of fanfiction it is. Probably some Gary Stu thing? XD Or maybe it is a really good piece of work, but let him publish it himself. :D

I agree with the comments about privacy etc. How would you feel if someone
Rhonda on July 24 2009 #
Nooo! I think I’d actually be a little embarrassed if someone found I was a secret fanfiction writer. So I say let him keep it to himself!

Aw, that’s cute. I would love to read it, but would feel bad if you didn’t ask your brother first. Who knows – he might be honored that you wanted to share it with people.
Caity on July 24 2009 #
You don’t need to post it, but you could give a general synopsis/let us know the ’ships involved.
Jennifer on July 24 2009 #
I’d be embarrassed if someone posted fanfiction that I secretly wrote (but I don’t write fanfiction, so I wouldn’t have that problem :p), but if your brother gave you permission to post it, I wouldn’t be opposed to reading it!
Meg on July 24 2009 #
Yikes! Don’t do it… Wouldn’t he get pissed for violating his privacy?
Just ask him about it and see where it goes from there…
I wonder if it’s slash.. hmmm
Kristine on July 24 2009 #
That would be very wrong.
Stephanie on July 24 2009 #
I agree with Jem. It’s his choice whether or not he wants it to be seen by others, not yours.
Manda on July 24 2009 #
I have to agree with everyone else; let your brother decide whether or not he wants it on the web. If he does though, I’d be pretty interested in reading it.

And then then there’s My Immortal.

Rosemary makes a good point too. If it’s already on the web I say it’s fair game :)

I think that’s cute too.. but don’t post it here unless he lets you.. he might disown you for being his sister. =P

Ooooohh my gawd. If I found out my brother wrote HP fanfiction, I would copy it off his computer and email it to all his friends, teachers, and especially his gf or his crush.
Cindy on July 24 2009 #
It sounds like your brother has been busy. I wonder if he has plans on publishing it?
Brandy on July 24 2009 #
I totally wouldn’t upload the stuff without his permission; that doesn’t seem right.
Sarah on July 25 2009 #
Awww come on, share a blurb! If there’s talent, the world ought to know.
And wow, I can never write a multi-chapter fan fic. Kudos to your bro.
