July 15 2009: How I Fix Problems
I was feeling a bit upset this morning, so upon getting home, I:
- Washed all the dishes
- Scrubbed down the kitchen
- Wiped down and tidied the clutter on the dining table
- Scrubbed the toilets
- Scrubbed down the bathroom
- Vacuumed the whole house
- Wiped down all the glass and mirrors
- Vacuumed and wiped down the interior of my car
- Washed my car
- Sorted out the laundry
- Did the ironing
- Paid some bills
- Balanced my bank account
It says something about my character I think, that instead of finding comfort and solace in a chocolate bar and daytime television like others would, I throw myself into work and try to keep myself busy and occupied. Though to spend my only day off in X number of days (I think I was heading up to two weeks worth of work every day?) doing household chores seems almost like a waste of my time, especially as it didn’t help in making me feel any better.
The day can only improve though – I’m heading off to Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince tonight with a few friends. I have my wizard’s cloak and a wand at the ready (and lipstick to draw on my scar)!

Cleaning is what I do when I’m feeling upset, too. I know at least one of my friends also cleans a lot when she’s feeling angry. For me, I think that cleaning things makes me feel like I’m doing something — I’m moving around, being helpful, and selflessly taking on tasks no one else wants to do. Seeing as when I’m upset, I’m usually upset with myself for something, I think that feeling is really helpful.
Sitting around watching TV and eating chocolate really doesn’t help. It only gives me more time to dwell on my own problems. It’s better to be so active and busy that you don’t have the chance to think about it, I think.

Every now and then, I clean when I’m upset… but I usually cook first. Then I clean up the kitchen.
Ahhh I wanna see Harry Potter tonight! I have to take some quizzes for my online class though =/

harry potter!!! wooo!!!
(and yeh, i do exactly the same thing, i think cleaning makes you feel like you’ve really accomplished something – i tend to do organising rather than cleaning though – things like organising the bookshelves, or sorting out the linen cupboard…)

I kind of do the same thing, I try to keep myself busy when I have problems rather than indulding in eating etc. But no matter what you do, if you don’t confront your problems head on, the end of the day they are still there (but at least your house is clean!)
Have fun at HP, I so wish I could go today but I have to work :(

Hooray for HP! :D
It’s funny, because I do a similar thing when I’m angry or upset – I love to clean and organize and it calms me right down. The worst, though, is that if I’m in a bad mood but there’s nothing to organize, I will literally pull stuff out of place just so I can clean it back up again.

I tend to do a lot of cleaning when I’m upset. When I get in a fight with my parents, for instance, I go up to my room, take everything out of my closet, and then completely reorganise. It’s probably just that I’m pretty obsessive about organisation anyway, but it’s oddly soothing.
I’m seeing HP today. :D

I’m seeing HP today in the evening!
When I’m upset, I go to my room and sleep. :P Since I’m not lucid, I can’t worry about stuff, at least for the duration of my nap.

I’m completely the same way. I have to clean and organize when I’m upset. I can’t sulk or sit in one place or it bothers me too much. I’m glad to know I’m not alone!

I have been trying to do things like that too when I’m upset or thinking too much. I was reading somewhere that using your body to clean or go for a walk or something really gets rid of anxiety and channels your mind away from bad thoughts. I’m glad you do this naturally. For me, it’s something I’ve had to work at.

I like being busy too; it really DOES help take your mind off any unpleasant things happening. But then again, I like being busy with things I like to do….like if my future is depressing me (which it is) I do not want to occupy myself with studying for the test that will determine my future D= but laundry and cleaning are good.
And yay! for Harry Potter. I hope you have loads of fun and at least for a few hours you can forget everything. haha it’s so cute that you’re dressing up!

I wish i was more like that – I do the exact opposite to you – I indulge… which is probably not the best cos its so counter-productive! Can we trade?

Hehe… I’m pretty much the same. When something is bugging me, I’ll start either cleaning or arranging things, like putting books in alphabetical order. I have to do something in order to sort my problem out.

well, you are accomplishing something. if i’m upset, i prefer to cool it down, eat chocolates or something. i definitely wouldn’t be able to work if i’m not in the mood.

I’ll invite you over and piss you off, this way you’ll clean the house. :D
