June 24 2009: Phenomenal Friends

In my first year of high school, I met a boy. We struck up a connection because (and he’ll forgive me for saying this) we were both somewhat socially awkward. Fantastic people of course, somewhat older than our years, but simply socially awkward and we bonded because of this. We were, I think, easily the weirdest people in our class. We were close in the early years of high school, until he left to attend another school, though we kept communicating via email and managed to catch up once in a blue moon.

He was the first person I showed my tattoo to when I got it at the age of seventeen. He was the person I went out for a drink with after my high school graduation ceremony. He was the person who was concerned when I had my mini-meltdown a few weeks ago. He’s a person I’ve been turning to for advice and reassurance in recent weeks whenever I get struck by periods of self-doubt and uneasiness (no, I’m not as infallible as I seem, yes, I have my moments of weakness just like everyone else).

Throughout the years, we’ve been friends. There have been long periods of months, years even, when we lost touch, but despite the absence, we’ve always been friends. From age twelve right through till now, we’ve been friends. I never doubted his friendship for a minute, and I’m sure he’s never doubted mine. Today you can visit him at his new(ish) site: jacobcorcoran.com. Go visit his site, and get to know one of the most phenomenal people of my acquaintance.

  1. Friends like that are awesome, like you say. My oldest friendship is somewhat like that, though a little more distant. We can go for years without seeing each other yet grow together during that time without contact.

  2. Friends like that are the best kind. You and Jacob sound like me and my best friend, except a little different as my best friend lives half a world away from me.

  4. I wish I had just one friend like this. It would make the agony of making and keeping friends worth it.

  6. You sure know how to make a guy feel like a million bucks, Amanda! I wrote a reply post, but it’s not nearly as well-crafted and inspiring as this one.
