June 15 2009: QOTW: Wedding Dresses
I had dinner with my friend Rebekah last night (some of you might recognise her name – she comments here occasionally), and got all gushy over wedding dresses and wedding planning. Obviously not my own, but hers – she’ll be getting married late next year, and the wannabe event organiser in me (e.g. the pedantic spreadsheeter) wants to plan and organise her wedding for her. For the meantime however, I’ll settle for going wedding dress shopping.
While I won’t be getting married any time soon, I’ve actually already planned my own wedding dress, and have known for years what I want it to be like. If I were more artistically talented, I’d draw a visual example of what it’ll look like, but you’ll have to deal with the following descriptors:
- Strapless
- Boned waist
- Long skirt – not a full skirt, but more a fishtail style with a short train
- Base fabric in cream satin – a matte rather than shiny satin
- Gold lace overlay over the entire gown
- Lining of the dress will be embroidered gold Chinese silk
And actually, after doing some quick Googling, it’ll look like a cross between these dresses – this style, with this lace overlay and this lining.
I’m prepared to make some small concessions (e.g. with my large mammaries, I may not be able to do strapless), but otherwise that’s what I want. The most important part is the amalgamation of East and West – to somehow incorporate my Chinese background into a more traditional Western wedding gown – custom-made of course.
Question of the Week: Do you know what you want your wedding outfit to be like, or alternatively, are you already married and what did you wear?

Mine will hopefully be ivory, off the shoulder, with an empire waist (though I’m also down with a boned waist)- I’m not so sure about how big I want the skirt to be, I guess it decides on how the waist is cut. I liked this dress:

But the ruffles are probably hard to pull off if you’re not tall-ish.

Honestly, I have no idea if I ever want to get married, and if I do get married what I would wear.
When I was younger I used to say that I would get married in a pair of pants, which would greatly shock my friends. (“But it’s the most important day of your life!”)
These days however I think although I would perhaps like to get married in a dress, I would feel much, much more comfortable in pants… :P

If I ever do get married (which I sincerely doubt), my wedding gear would be probably a pair of jeans, a dressy shirt and my skull printed Chucks :P Because I’m alternative like that :D

Ivory satin. Boned bodice with a sweetheart neckline. Probably thin straps or a halter because not boobalicious enough to pull off strapless. Form fitting with a slight train — no obscene amounts of toulle (sp?) for me. And beaded all over. I saw one at a wedding display in the mall that was basically my vision. Too bad I was only 15 at the time haha.

Not sure if I’ll ever get married, as I do prefer the whole long-term cohabitation thing for now (much to my Asian parents’ chagrin :P). But if I ever do, I’d probably like my wedding dress to look something like this:

I’d need to lose a bit of the junk first, before that’d work, but I think it looks gorgeous :).

Mine will seriously be something off-the-rack at a local dress shop. Just simple, flowy skirt to the knees, no bells, no whistles, in a light pink or light yellow. My wedding isn’t about my dress– it’s about the dance party and sundae bar following a boring city hall paper signing ritual! :D

If I get married (if being the operative word), I’m not too fussed about what I’ll wear. White is really not a great colour on me, so I’ll probably end up doing something a bit weird, like turquoise. I definitely won’t spend lots of money on it, though. Like Aisling said, the dress isn’t the important part.

I’ve always wanted to get married in Vera Wang. There’s just something really magical about some of her dresses. And I love this one: http://moourl.com/4y4mc

The most thought I’ve given to a potential wedding of mine is that I want two ceremonies: a traditional Chinese one, and a traditional Western one so that I won’t have to pick between the two halves of my heritage. And if my future husband is of a different nationality then I’ll have to somehow incorporate that too. :P
As for the dresses, I want a traditional Chinese dress, but I’m not sure what I want in the detailing. For the Western-style dress, I want it to be white and strapless. That’s all I’ve got so far!

I have no clue what I’d wear on my wedding day, if I ever get married that is of course. I do like the dress with the lace overlay you posted though. It’s simple yet beautiful and it stands out from the other wedding dresses.

I like that you would integrate both cultures like that! I made a post about it ages ago, but I would LOVE if I could get married in the Reem Acra Olivia Wilde wore to the Oscars:

I really like that it’s simple and flows. Though it might look horrible on me due to the total lack of boobs…doesn’t look like I can wear a bra with it either! Oh well, by the looks of it, I have plenty of time to think about it =/

Full corpsepaint, studded leather and a novelty axe. Like this: http://scienceblogs.com/aardvarchaeology/upload/2007/08/bm11.jpg

Something very similar to either of those, very soft, classic, feminine. I’m short though so I don’t really know how it’ll look lol

Wow, that sounds gorgeous! I can’t believe it! I wish I had thought mine through more but I’m happy with what I have to wear next week.
My pictures of me in the dress when I tried it on are here at my Flickr.

I’ve had a pretty much completed idea of what I’ve wanted for a while. Mostly my own creation, drawing a bit on older styles of dress, high necks etc.
I thought I’d have to get such a thing made especiallly but then I saw my mum’s wedding photos and her dress was about 90% what I wanted, it was really uncanny. I’d probably consider asking to use it.

You’re like my sister. Growing up, even when she didn’t have a guy in mind yet, she already knew what her wedding dress will look like!
I’ve never really thought about the specifics of my dress but if I had it my way, it would be a flowy Grecian-style dress (with no beading… and I wanted it to be kinda sheer) because I want my wedding to be at a remote beach with just 4 witnesses. But I don’t want to be disowned by the family that I can’t invite to my wedding so I might have to come up with something more fitting for a bigger wedding…

I actually haven’t really thought about what it should look like, although I did look around the store a little when I went with my best friend (who’s getting married this Saturday)
A lot of the time women have a picture of “THE” dress on mind and it turns out it doesn’t fit their body type or doesn’t look good on them for another reason. So knowing what you want is a good thing but pinning yourself down on it and absolutely needing to have it (without concessions) is just not a good idea…
Chans on June 17 2009 #
Hmmm…I don’t know really…Chans’s comment made me think though…
Although if I do get married, the ceremony will be cosplayish in nature, thanks to my love of anime and video games (and my recent interest in cosplaying). :3 (And I’ll probably go as…someone…)

I’ve had my ideal wedding dress in mind for a while: something Disney-princess like (I’m a sucker for Disney), so maybe http://www.milanoo.com/en/thing/Sweetheart-Beaded-Satin-Wedding-Dress-module-item-id-6084.html minus the beads/embroidery.
But it’s hard to say, you never know what really looks good on you until you try it on.

Maybe that’s why I never got married yet…I can never decide on a dress and every time I see something new I go “thats the one!!” but then months later I hate it.
I have switched from casual flowy summery dress to full on puffy meringue. I even own a wedding dress which is strapless and has embroidered and pearled details down to the was it and then just an A-line skirt. I loved it at the time but now I look at it and go yuck. Reality is no matter what dress I have I will probably look at it in 5, 10, 20 years and go wtf did I wear that for.
I also switch from “a wedding is the biggest day of your life” or “it’s not the wedding that counts, but the marriage behind it” and thus we still haven’t done our vows.
I really like your dress. I can’t believe you have one picked out (well in your head) already. Thinking in advance ;)
I can’t even set a date let alone choose a dress.

I freaking love wedding dresses, I really like the mermaid shape, if you know what I mean. I also really like lace, so maybe it’d be a little lacy. Haven’t decided yet, heh heh.

Considering that I’m cheap with stuff like this (I’d rather spend my money on my hobbies), I’d tell my husband-to-be that we have to get married at the justice of peace and spend our wedding money on our honeymoon! With that said, my wedding outfit will consist of what I wear every day, Muhahahaha! :D
