June 14 2009: A Career Job

I’ve been applying for jobs again. Yes, I already have two jobs. Yes, I want to look for another job.

While I’m happy with my weekend retail position (I’m getting good hours and the pay is excellent as I get weekend rates), I’m less satisfied with my admin position at a health education company which I hold Mondays through Wednesdays. It’s not as related to my Masters studies as I originally thought, and there simply isn’t enough work available to keep me stimulated and interested. I easily get through all the work I have to do in the first hour I’m at work, so for the other six hours I’m there, I’m chatting to people via eBuddy, Facebooking, etc. And really, there’s only so much satisfaction one can get from playing endless games of Bejewelled.

So, on the side, I’m looking at and applying for other jobs that are actually more suited to my postgraduate field of community/social work. Thus far, they’ve included roles in nursing management (e.g. managing a nursing agency), administration work in community housing and volunteer coordination in a community integration centre. These are all part-time roles, and due to the largely not-for-profit nature of the organisations, aren’t particularly well-paid.

But, it’ll be a step in the right direction, to actually having a career job instead of a shitkicker “just for money” job. And maybe that’s something I should start looking at, to be realistic. My proposed freelancing may never grow into a full-time income, and I really should have a contingency plan of some kind.

  1. It’s funny, here you are thinking about some kind of 9-5 contingency plan, and yet “miss 9-5″ over here is thinking about departing from that line of things in the future. I don’t know why I’m considering it at this point, given the pending doom of financial ruin with a sprog (minor exaggeration) and it will probably be nothing but a pipe dream for many years… but for the first time in my life I’m beginning to loathe being stuck in an office having to answer to other people’s demands.

  2. Even though it might not be as well paid as you’d like I say you should really look for something in your field of work. Everybody has to start somewhere and generally that’s at the bottom of the line to work your way up (and some of us do it faster than others).

Every step in the right direction is one closer to your goal! Good luck :D

  3. I know exactly what you mean. I work as an Admin of sorts for an accounting firm here, and I swear, I did absolutely nothing all of last week. I’ve been trying to look for something geared more towards my major (also non-profit), but sadly, everything I find has “must be bilingual” caveat attached to it.

Bah – all the more reason for me to consider peacing out to the UK or Oz, I guess :P.

  4. Good luck finding another job. I think it’s a good idea to do something that is more related to your schooling. It will look better on a resume.

  5. Good luck with finding another job, and I agree with your train of thought. It would be better to do something related to your studies even though it pays less. Again, good luck! :)

  9. I would hate having a job that doesn’t keep me busy. I’ve never had a job though, ahhhh. So I applaud you for making so much effort to get a job more in line with your career. Any chance you’d put up a blog entry on how you’re looking for jobs in the area? Tips and hints?
