I Spent Too Much

June 11, 2009 | Filed under Money, Style

For the first time in my life, I splashed out more than $100AUD on a single item of clothing. I know. I’m still in shock myself, and feel some remorse, though it was hardly an impulse purchase. I’d been looking for the exact item for a good month, and had tried on a million different candidates, before finally settling on the one. I didn’t even buy it immediately, allowing myself a two day cooling off and reflection period so I knew that I definitely wanted the item. I also got mass opinion on the item, sending photos to Mr. M, my mother, my cousin, friends, and Twitter for opinions on whether I actually looked any good in it.

After all that, I finally decided to shell out $199.95AUD for a classic, simple, black winter coat from FCUK. It was pretty much the only coat I could find to suit my requirements (hip-length, longer sleeves, double breasted, simple collar, does up over my breasts – the last point is harder to fulfill than you could imagine!), in a warm fabric: 80% wool, 15% polyester, 5% polyamide. This is going to be my all-purpose, wear-it-six-days-a-week jacket.

The above photo is what I sent around to various peoples for opinions – it was taken when I was trying it on in the store. It looks a little bulkier in the photo because I was wearing a heavy fleecy jumper underneath, but it’s pretty much ideal. I’ll be selling off the three jackets that this one jacket will replace (I had three jackets for different purposes, but this one coat is versatile enough to cover all these purposes), so the money I’ll receive from doing so will help to reconcile myself to the idea that I could have spent that much on a single item of clothing.

And well, this one purchase has pretty much ruined the good streak I was on by not shopping. It doesn’t help that I spent $85AUD last week on two bras (most of mine were getting too worn and tatty), a black knee-length skirt (for work) and a blue short-sleeved blouse (work uniform). While they were essential purchases, as in I need to wear bras what with my huge jugs, and I need to adhere to a dress code for work, I still feel guilty for spending money. Just the act of taking cash out of wallet or swiping my credit card is enough to trigger a huge sense of guilt. I really need to work on that and learn to loosen up a bit when it comes to money management.

  5. I am very much the same as you – it takes me a lot of effort to spend my money and I don’t even have to worry about half of the money stuff you do! Its not like I have bills to pay or anything lol – my friends call me stingy. =p
But, the jacket looks super cute and I applaud you for finally finding the perfect jacket.

  6. You shouldn’t feel guilty. You’ll get a ridiculous amount of usage out of it…

  7. jacket’s nice! if only the weather here permits such outfit, i would definitely get and wear something similar to that.

i know the feeling of guilt that you’ve spent so much on clothes. i usually get that a lot especially when i’m on a budget then suddenly i find myself needing specific items of clothing ie bra THEN, happening to just find the perfect piece. of course i just had to buy them both tsk.

anyway, don’t feel guilty. the jacket you got has the classic look. i’m betting that you’ll be using that a lot.

  8. It’s cute though. And if you get a lot of use out of it, and it replaces 3 jackets… well, then it’s worth it, and you shouldn’t feel guilty about it.

I admit, I’m surprised that you do feel guilty, what with how often you seem to spend money on clothes (at least, compared to me). I always thought that was something you didn’t think about as much (so long as you got good deals on what you bought). Kind of good to hear that you’re human in this regard, too.

  12. Good coats are so expensive, but if they keep you warm better to spend it on that then say chocolate which won’t last.

Gorgeous jacket, nice style and easy to mix and match.
