Actually Making An Effort
May 10, 2009 | Filed under Relationships/Men, Style

For a time at the start of a relationship, most people still try to make an effort with their appearance. They still do their hair, use some makeup, and make sure not to constantly be seen in trackpants and a slobby Tshirt, even if that’s their normal daily outfit. They don’t start to relax and let themselves be seen anything less than perfectly groomed for a month, two months, three months into a relationship.
I’m not one of those people. From the very start of my time with Mr. M, I’ve not done my hair, I’ve gone days (a week!) without shaving my legs or pits, I rarely wear makeup, and I’m quite happy slobbing around in jeans and a Tshirt, especially as clothes come off pretty quickly when I’m with him anyway. It probably helped that we had been spending nearly every day together at the start, so we reached a high comfort level very early on.
So, last night I thought I’d do something different, and actually make a bit of an effort with my appearance before heading over to his house. I looked, if I dare say so myself, hot, or at least, hotter than I already normally do.
- Miss Shop black lowcut dress – $10AUD from $59.95AUD
- Events black long vest cardigan – bought four years ago, can’t remember the price!
- Supre black elastic waist belt – $5AUD from $19.95AUD
- Kayser flesh toned fishnet thigh high stockings – $2.50AUD from $19.95AUD
- Urban Soul grey heels – $10.90AUD from $240AUD
Suffice it to say that he thought I looked hot as well, and was quite happy to show his appreciation.

I wish there was a phonetic transcription of the whistle, because it would go right here. Looking good, but you know that :)

I’m pretty comfortable to slob around with my boyfriend too, because I know he thinks I’m beautiful no matter what. (haha!) The first photo I ever sent him of me was me dressed in a really, really too big World of Warcraft t-shirt and my horrible glasses and a really big geeky smile… I looked like a total nerd, seriously. O_o;
We do like to dress up smart and go out together around the expensive parts of the city, and pretend we’re richer than we really are. It’s fun. We’ve even considered booking in viewings for the really expensive London apartments, just to see what it would be like to be rich. You should try it. ;) Plus, he looks totally hot in a suit.

Some of us never bothered to make an effort. Bah :p Why pretend to be something I’m not? It would have only led to disappointment down the line.

The outfit looks amazing! I agree, I never try to put up appearances. If they like me, they’ll like me for me and not my looks.

Do guys also try to make an effort about their appearance, or is it just women that care? Because if it isn’t I am really going to stop giving a damn.
You wrote “most people” instead of “most girls and women”, which got me wondering. Because I see it mostly as girls and women who put pressure on themselves to look nice. Ever. And that frustrates me.
Reply: I’d like to think that men make the same effort, but really, because they don’t have as much variety in clothes (jeans and a Tshirt for them can be quite dressy, but casual too), it’s a lot easier for them…

Rawr, Amanda looks hot ;)
Boyfriend actually told me he prefers me “natural” looking, so I’ve stopped trying so hard when I’m just going to classes and hanging out at the apartment. If we’re going out I’ll get a little dressed up, but otherwise I just chill out.

Honestly, I don’t give compliments often… like as in, ever. So when I do I really mean them.
But yes, you looked hot! Definitely hot. It makes me jealous I don’t have a nice womanly body. I want curves and nice clothes damn it :(

I’d hit it.

Sorry I didn’t read the rest of the post. The cleavage distracted me.

I always think anyone should like me for who I am, shaven legs or not. I dress up as much (or as little) as I want to.
That dress is awesome though and if I had anything like that in my closet I would wear it a lot :)
