A Black Woollen Blazer Jacket
May 5, 2009 | Filed under Style
Leading on from yesterday’s entry about not shopping and pedantic wardrobe categorisation, I’ve come to realise that I’m actually missing a fairly crucial item of clothing – the black wool blazer jacket. While my spreadsheet shows that I have “Thin black overcoat” and “Black felt blazer”, what I lack is actually something like this. Something standard and warm – something I can throw on with jeans and a Tshirt on the weekend, or over a suit for work.
There are problems with the two black jackets I do have: The thin black overcoat is an awkward length. It’s really only something that I can wear with pants, as the longer bum-length means that it looks strange over skirts and dresses. It’s also really not warm enough for an English winter – and hardly warm enough even for an Australian winter. It’s really an autumn/spring only type of jacket.
The black felt blazer is too funky. The gold braid gives it an insouciant military-like air, which, while great for weekend wear with skinny jeans as it gives me a slightly punk look, simply isn’t corporate enough for an office environment. There’s also no way of doing this blazer up – there’s no buttons, no belt, etc., so one’s chest can get a bit cold exposed to the elements.
So, if I buy myself a nice black wool blazer jacket (hip-length, no extra adornment), that would sort out my jacket dilemma. I could then sell the other two black jackets I have on eBay, as this one jacket would fulfill all my black jacket needs. For a good pure wool jacket that can withstand the rigours of an English winter of course, one has to shell out at least a hundred dollars…sigh. Spending money makes me sad, though I know it’s a good investment for the future, and more practical too – why have two jackets for different purposes when one jacket would suffice? I might wait until September before I start shopping for it though, when we’re out of the Australian winter and winter jackets will be on sale.

Yeah, actually I want a thinner blazer for these Texas winters. I need to start working on my closet basics. Good luck in finding your jacket!

I’ve always wanted something like that, but can never find anything affordable/my size. Dream jackets are so hard to find!
