March 28 2009: More Phone Love (And A Shock)

Filed under Media & Online & Uni/Work with 6 Comments

This? This right here would have been the first post written from my new phone, had it not been for the teasing of the person I was staying with last night. I’ve been fangirling about the phone to everyone I know:

  1. OMG, look, I can check my email!
  2. There’s a Facebook link on the front page!
  3. Oooh, check out the sexy buttons!

I can’t help it, it is just a very sexy phone. It hasn’t left my hand for the past two days, give or take 24 hours in which I might have been thoroughly worn out by an encounter which left me sleepless and a little bruised. Even in those 24 hours however, I was tempted to get onto the Internet, log into my WordPress admin panel, and write a quick entry using the entirely-convenient QWERTY keypad…and probably would have, if I hadn’t been mocked mercilessly for being distracted by my shiny new toy from doing something much more important. Like sex. Lots and lots of sex. Which I prioritised above blogging from my phone.

Anyway! After viewing this blog on my phone, I’m surprised by how well the layout holds up on a mobile browser. At 50% of the screen, it’s just about perfect. Some side-scrolling, but all the text is easily readable, which is the main objective. It’s good to know that I won’t have to change my layout any time soon to cater for mobile readers, considering that I end up having to re-teach myself CSS every time!

In other words, I apparently have a 4500 word essay due in a week and a half. I guess it’s time to get cracking on actually doing some readings

March 26 2009: Corporate Mobiles

My old LGU310 pink mobile phone lasted me through two years of heavy duty warfare, from the thrice-daily occurence of dropping it on a hard floor to being left outside during a heavy rainstorm which almost killed it. It’s battered and covered with scratches – a well-earned rest is long overdue.

Enter the replacement, courtesy of a free handset upgrade by my service provider. A blue Nokia E63 with full QWERTY keyboard for convenience of messaging; I’m a bit of a text monster. It’s perhaps a bit more elaborate and feature-filled than what I actually need a mobile for:

  1. Sending and receiving texts
  2. Making and receiving calls

Yes, I’m one of those people who don’t require a 10 megapixel inbuilt camera, full music player, and all the added extras that it comes with. With that said however, I probably will become addicted to the internet acces that it comes with – 24/7 access to my emails and Facebook profile? How could I say no?

The important thing I suppose is that the appearance of the E63 is a lot more sedate and respectable than my former phone which was a vivid candy pink flip-top. As I’ve finally found a part-time position as a receptionist in the corporate environs of Melbourne city (shit pay, but related to my Masters studies, so good for exposure and experience in the field), respectability is definitely important!

March 25 2009: Hipster vs. Prepster

To the hipster with the peroxided Agyness Deyn hairdo, heavy eye makeup, and ancient Volkswagon plastered with independent media and alternative music bumper stickers,

Just because you think yourself to be cooler than us consumerist slobs in our mass-produced cars listening to Top 40 music, doesn’t mean that you can switch lanes without indicating. I will follow you for the next two kilometres down the road, incessantly tooting my horn in retaliation for your poor driving endangering my life.

Regards, that preppy Asian in corporate gear in the practical yellow Honda listening to Britney Spears.
