March 12 2009: 20/20 Vision

At my annual optometrist appointment today, my eyesight was tested at -10 and -9 in my left and right eyes respectively. In other words, I’m literally half blind without corrective lenses. On the bright side, my eyes have had the same prescription for the third year running, which is a sign that my vision is finally stabilising and that the rapidly deteriorating eyesight of my teen years is finally over. Once I manage to get through five years of stabilised vision, I’ll be a perfect candidate for laser eye surgery, and can finally achieve 20/20 vision.

So, laser eye surgery joins breast reduction surgery and permanent hair removal as the three procedures I want done to my body. The first two for practical reasons (over my lifetime, getting laser eye surgery is more financially viable than buying new glasses and contacts all the time, and I need breast reduction surgery for strained back issues), but the third is really pure vanity, and will only be done when I really have nothing better to do with my money – which, considering me and my habits, is never going to happen.

And in other news: I think I just heard my parents having sex; eating at Wagamama’s tonight made me miss the Wagamama’s I ate at in London; I cry every time I sing along to Avril Lavigne’s “When You’re Gone” on Singstar because you can project almost anything onto that song and relate to its lyrics; Manda interviewed me; and despite having never watched Gossip Girl in my entire life, I just used Nate’s dress sense to illustrate to a friend the way I think he should dress. I can see why Nate is more attractive than Chuck or Dan to most GG fangirls.

  1. Nate is more conventionally attractive, but I don’t think he is favored by the fangirls of the show. I know he isn’t for me.

  2. Wow, -10 and -9? I can’t imagine how blurry everything must be for you! I recently got an eye exam done and I found out that in a year, I went from -1.50 in each eye to -2.75 in one eye and -2.50 in the other. My optometrist said it would keep deteriorating rapidly if I didn’t wear the glasses all the time, an idea that I absolutely hate because I just can’t picture myself wearing glasses for the rest of my life. Of course, contacts are an option but the thought of poking my eye with a lens is not very attractive either, although I might consider it if I get sick of having to wear glasses all the time.

Anyway, I’m glad your vision is now stabilized and you can have surgery done. I didn’t know you had to wait for that to happen to do it.

Breast reduction surgery sounds like something I would get done, if I weren’t scared of getting surgery at all :P

Oh and, by the way, I prefer Chuck ;)

  4. In terms of looks, I’m a huge Nate fan. But in terms of character and storyline, I’m all about Chuck. I do like Nate though, it’s just cause it seems like the writers of Gossip Girl have no idea what to do with him anymore, and put him in the most random situations and never give him a storyline that lasts for more than half an episode at a time. It’s a shame, because Nate had the potential for some good storylines all throughout this current season. Hopefully that’ll be fixed next season!

  5. Nate, ftw!

My eyesight is between -2 and -3, but I’m tired of wearing glasses. I think I’ll have laser eye surgery when I’m old enough.

I’d also love to do hair removal, but I don’t know if that will ever actually happen.

  6. I never thought I’d consider it, but laser eye surgery is definitely sounding better and better to me these days. I don’t mind wear glasses, but my eye sight is getting worse and worse, so I think I may have to permanently wear them soon. (At the moment, I only technically need them for distance.) I can’t see myself wearing glasses 24/7, and I contacts scare the bejesus out of me! Haha.

I’ve had laser hair removal done before. It sorta worked. I think I needed a few more sessions, and I could always go back and get it finished, I’m just cheap. XD Maybe someday I’ll finish. If you go through with that, unless you have a very high pain threshold, I definitely recommend getting this special cream stuff that numbs your body. (Or maybe I’m a wimp, but after awhile, the laser hurts.)

  7. omg I dunno how you see at all. My brother is somewhere in that range too. But remember to make sure with your optometrist that you’re getting the right procedure done at the right time. My aunt got her eyes done a few years ago and at that time laser eye surgery wasn’t as good as it is now so she gets the occasional dry eye.

I was always afraid that my vision who get worse, but it stabilized around age 18.

  9. My eyes were fairly stable, until this past year where they suddenly jumped up one level. I don’t want to be blind :[

Hopefully one day laser eye surgery will be so good it won’t require reading glasses afterwards. When that happens, I’ll be on it like white on rice. Or chinese girls named Amanda on penis.

  10. And I thought my eyesight was bad at -7 and -6.50 (left and right). Last year was the first year that they hadn’t changed since I first got glasses 13 years ago. I’m due for a checkup soon and I’m hoping that they haven’t changed because I would about kill for laser surgery right now. 11 years of wearing contacts will do that to a person.

  11. My vision has been stable for the last four years I’m 2.75 in my R eye and 3.50 in my left. After my second year at stabilization my doctor wanted me to get my eyes done and I really do want to but I don’t know how I feel about getting them corrected and having to take out a 5000 loan for it… The doctor who does the surgery is really good though, he’s the one that does the lasik for the LA Lakers and other NBA players and a few Hollywood stars, so I might do it…

  12. Chuck wins.

The idea of laser surgery is very frightening to me. I plan on waiting until it’s been established for several more years before I think about getting it done.

  13. I’ve actually walked in on my parents after they’ve had sex. My father was all flustered picking his shorts up from the floor and yelling at me to knock. So embarrassing and pretty traumatic when you’re like twelve years old. Yuck!

I want laser surgery as well, though I’m terrified of getting it. My vision keeps getting worse every year, though. I’m currently at a -4.75 in one and -5.25 in the other, but it hasn’t stabilized yet. My vision gets worse with each annual visit, especially in my left eye (which has astigmatism). It’ll be a few more years until I’m able to get it. Hopefully by the time I’m thirty. Geez.

  14. Amanda,

You may want to consider other options than laser eye surgery as you are at the extreme end of what LASIK is capable of correcting. A “phakic IOL” may be a better option for you.

Regardless of the type of surgery you have, the most important decision anyone who is considering eye surgery must make is what surgeon to choose.

    Sincerely,
