Panda Eyes, And A Problem

March 3, 2009 | Filed under Body, Style, Uni/Work

Hi, I’m Amanda and I don’t learn from my mistakes.

After four years of ending up with panda eyes as a result of runny eyeliner and mascara after a couple of hours of sex, for some reason I still insist on wearing mascara (and occasionally, liquid eyeliner when I can be bothered) even when my only scheduled event in a particular day is a bed date. So what starts out hot, soon ends up with me looking like this. Or this even. (NB: Both photos not of me!)

By four in the afternoon today, I’d gone one step further and instead of some smearing of mascara, had actually managed to make myself look like I had two black eyes. For the record: black eyes are not attractive enough to be considered a fashion statement. Just ask Rihanna. So, the plan: purchase of some clear mascara to prevent this when I have some discretionary funds to spend. Or, somehow weaning myself off wearing mascara, which is unlikely.

In other news, I’ve received my course materials for the first unit of my Master of Human Services Management, which I’ll be studying via distance education.

Holy. Shit. One thing that didn’t cross my mind when applying for postgraduate study was the fact that I would have no lectures to attend if I chose distance education. Any essays or work I submit for assessment will have to be based on work and research that I’ve actually done independently, rather than simply paraphrasing lectures and tutorials and throwing a couple of academic quotes into the mix (a method which has thus far managed to get me a Distinction average throughout my tertiary career!). Therefore: I actually have to do the set readings for my entire Masters degree, when I have only ever done readings for one unit (out of thirty-odd) in my entire four years at university.

This may prove to be a problem.

  1. I love wearing eyeliner, but I don’t bother with it unless I have something special to attend to because it gets smudgy and I really can’t be bothered dealing with it, or any makeup for that matter :P

Lecture notes being posted online are a godsend. I do my readings for most of my classes, but as my degree is 2/3 language-based (French and Chinese) and 1/3 communication media-based, I don’t have all that much reading to do, for the most part. Except for when I took World Politics last semester and nearly drowned in readings… but then my professor said both the midterm and final were take home essays, so I didn’t do anymore readings for that class :P

  2. So why insist on the eyeliner/mascara during sex? I always use them going out to parties, sometimes in uni etc but I don’t actually feel very comfortable with them on. (Psychological thing, my eyes get so tired T_T)

And wow that’s unfair. I remember for my law essays last year we couldn’t just paraphrase lectures and tutorials. We would actually need to find out the source of lecture and tutorial notes and make references to that original source. Thanks but no thanks lol. Good luck with the reading. :P

Reply: I always wear mascara – pretty much as soon as I wash my face and moisturise in the morning, I put on mascara. If I don’t, my short Asian eyelashes just disappear and I look eyelash-less.

  3. I always wear eyeliner and mascara and in the typical weather we get, it always smears. But I only use it on the upper lid, so it just looks less defined, no panda eyes thank goodness.

And I feel ya about the reading. My first year and most of my second I didn’t really have to read much. Now this year, I’ve pretty much read the entire textbook for each course D=

    OH NO YOU DIDN’T!!!!

Trying to put eyeliner on my single lids makes me sad. Because it never really works out, and I’m not willing to risk the panda look for a few minutes of smoky eyes.

Just don’t do it! I mean, sure, getting your Masters might seem worth it, but honestly. There’s a line.

  7. Haha you are too funny. I tend to not wear eye makeup for that exact reason.

Good luck with all those readings! That’s one thing I’m not looking forward to when I start my Master’s.

  8. Expect to do a lot of reading and a lot of studying for distance courses. I’ve had a few in college and it was tough. But then again, it was the most rewarding since I had to do almost all the work (and teaching) by myself. Good luck!

  9. You just need to find a man who thinks runny mascara/eye liner is sexy. They do exist. I’ve dated one. He told me to do my makeup for the next day before bed and then go out :P

  10. I hate it when you actually have to READ all the material D: It’s so much easier to just pay attention during a class.

  11. Panda eyes? If you’ve put up with them for four years, they can’t look or be that bad. Right? ;)

As for your postgraduate career, it’s about time you start suffering. :P You don’t know how lucky you were as undergrad if you were able to mostly use notes from lectures/tutorials in papers. I didn’t even have that opportunity as a first year undergrad.

But, on a related note, I don’t get the point behind assigning readings if the information in them is going to be repeated in lectures. That sounds like a waste of time.
