What Special Day?

February 14, 2009 | Filed under Family & Friends

So, Valentine’s Day. What did everyone get up to? Alex and I decided to simply pretend that it didn’t exist, and a brief period of weakness aside (“If I buy you a rose, and you buy me one, we could say we’ve received Valentine’s presents?”), we did well in ignoring the Hallmark holiday.

We spent last night, Valentine’s Eve, randomly wandering around the streets of Melbourne before ending up at Transport bar in Federation Square. Danced my feet off (literally, I’m never dancing in heels higher than an inch again) while trying to avoid the attentions of undesirable guys. Ended up walking back to the car in socks only on the filthy Melbourne streets, as that was deemed to be a more attractive option than walking back to the car in heels (the socks were promptly disposed of after the walk) – but this will only serve as a reminder to always carry a pair of flats with me.

As for the big V day itself, I ended up sleeping in till past noon for the first time in months before heading off to the beach with my brother and Alex. We were there for pretty much the entire day – from two in the afternoon till eight in the evening. Aside from one couple near us who should probably have gotten a room rather than grind against each other on the sand (every one knows it gets into uncomfortable places), the beach was probably the best possible location for people wanting to escape the gooey and saccharine qualities of Valentine’s Day – with the exception of a few families, we virtually had the beach to ourselves.

There was sandcastle building, there was burying-brother-in-sand, there was a dude friend coming to say hi, there was squealing as we hit the icy water…and there was belly bulging from too many beers on holiday. Really should do something about that. Keen-eyed long-term readers of this blog may also recognise that particular bikini top.

I’ll leave you with a message of love that I sent to all my friends in the early hours of this morning:

3am on 14 Feb, & danced vday eve away! Anyway, Reminder: vday not 4 lovers only! ure all important 2 me, i love u all. Best mates a gal could ask 4. Xxmanda

And the same message goes out to all those who read this blog: I do love each and every one of you (even the negative ones). Every little bit that you contribute back to this blog, every piece of feedback I receive, reminds me how important the act of self-expression and reflection is.

  1. Lovely beach outfit, I need a bikini top that can contain my massive breasts too. Not that there’s much opportunity to get them out in Manchester in February.

Thanks for the text message. Right back at you my dear. :)

  2. Aw, don’t feel bad. I have that tummy bulge also, but it’s from genetics.

Lol @ walking around Melbourne in sock feet, I totally walked around New York City’s Penn Station in bare feet the other day. Okay, not really “walked around,” but I did take my shoes off, because my flats were making my feet sweaty.

  3. What a great day to spend the day! I’m dying to go to the beach, but the water is still coldish over here and I want to avoid the jellyfish :P Much love for you! <3

  4. I dearly wish I could go to the beach on Valentines day! It was 38 degrees Fahrenheit today though, so that was ruled out. I love your bottoms in the picture by the way. They have a really neat design on them!
