Link Dump no.4

I had to kind of skip the past three or so weeks, as I had a huge backlog of posts in my feedreader (500+) that I had no hope of getting through them all (so, sorry if I haven’t been commenting on your blogs!). Such are the consequences of finishing off final assessments for the university year and getting caught up in X, Y, and Z events in the ‘real’ world. In any case: Some interesting political, racial, social, humourous, articles and websites (in my biased opinion) for your perusal.

  1. Scott Bridges: Happy Anniversary, Kev
One year on, a retrospective on Kevin Rudd’s first year as Australian Prime Minister. Some definite fails, but overall, a tentative win.
  2. George Megalogenis: Eat, drink, be merry
I actually agree heartily with this – while I would personally never do what he’s suggesting, I think it’s important for others to continue in a life of conspicuous consumption. Their spendings invigorates our economy, and if they were to downsize, the whole economy would collapse.
  3. Chris Crews: Shielded From Victory
I honestly didn’t even realise there were bulletproof glass panels protecting him on the night of the election. I have however, always realised that there are certain groups that won’t be able to reconcile themselves to the fact that there’ll be a black man in the White House. All those proudly proclaiming a post-racial America are simply deluded – race is still very much a current issue, the election of one half-black man doesn’t change the experiences of millions of others.
  4. Pickled Politics: Asian Identity Guilt Syndrome
There’s a difference I think, between wanting to teach your children about your cultural background to assuage your own guilt, and wanting to do it as a way of ensuring that a culture isn’t swallowed by Western globalisation. Unfortunately the latter isn’t touched upon, but it’s interesting nonetheless.
  5. deCODEme
It’s essentially a service that allows you to send in a piece of DNA (e.g. a cheek swab), and they can then test your DNA and inform you of the diseases and illnesses that you are genetically coded to have a higher risk of getting. It’s an interesting concept, but definitely open to abuse.
  6. Nora Dunn: Can You Afford To Have A Baby?
This is probably something that she (and she) should have read before she got herself knocked up and started living on government benefits.
  7. Dan Edwards: You Just Want Us To Look Bad
The article was a bit all over the shop, jumping from example, to example, to example, to point, to point, to point. On the whole however, he brings up some good points – the collective mentality by far overrides the individual mentality amongst most Chinese, the suppression of cultural products creating a social malaise, etc.
  8. A Wild Young Under-Whimsy: How to do the ‘Thriller’ dance, in 51 steps
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. The best dance moves, for the best MJ song ever. Everyone should learn how to do the Thriller dance, if only to re-enact the video clip with a bunch of friends.
  9. AAP: The Australian Sex Party set to launch
Just for lulz. I think I’ve found my new political party!
  10. Mullet Passions
More lulz! This dating site is…incredibly specific.
