October 20 2008: Some Thoughts For Upcoming Ebay Venture

With the submission of my last essay for the semester today, I intend on fulfilling the second objective of this post starting tomorrow. I’ve prepared an Excel spreadsheet that will detail expenditures (e.g. what I spend to buy items to sell, as well as cost of postage, eBay seller fees, Paypal fees, etc.) and income (e.g. how much items end up selling for).

I’ve currently spent about $70AUD in procuring stock to sell. I have made sure that purchased items are ones that, if unable to be sold online, can be worn by myself, or as a birthday gift to a friend, so they won’t end up being a total loss. I’m hoping that I will be able to sell the stock for at least $140AUD (gross selling price), which, after seller fees and the like, will allow me about $55AUD-$60AUD in profit. Not a lot, but enough to get started.

I have imposed two restrictions upon myself in order to minimise expenditure:

  1. Never go out of my way to shop for items or to post items. In other words, don’t use more petrol than is necessary. What I can do is stop off at an op shop on the way to work, or to post an item after having dropped my brother off at school.
  2. Never have more than ten items at any one time, to avoid the risk of unnecessary expenditure for unsaleable items.

I’m really hoping this venture turns out well. I’m pragmatic enough to understand that this will most likely not be a standard income, especially as I don’t intend on doing it on any more than an extremely part-time basis. What it will provide however, is a nice addition to my current income - enough to hopefully cover the costs of entertainment (e.g. movies, concerts, etc.) for me.

In any case, expect an update in a month’s time, to assess my position and whether it’s worthwhile to continue.

  6. See, you are a way better shopper than I am. I’m pretty good with money, but I ALWAYS go out of my way to buy new items - the only mall near my house is, how to put it… crap.
