QOTW: The Three Month Plan

October 14, 2008 | Filed under Life, Q.O.T.W., Uni/Work

I found out today that one of the guys in my Understanding Contemporary China class writes for the blog Stuff Asian People Like (see all articles by Shaun). This is why my class is awesome, because we have awesome bloggers, a relatively attractive tutor, and tutorials that somehow end up with discussions about the latest Hollywood movies and watching the SNL takes on Sarah Palin.

Regular university classes are coming to a close for me on Thursday, potentially forever, depending on my applications for further study and whether they’re accepted. I have one more essay due on Monday (which I conveniently thought was due in two weeks time, so that’d probably end up being a rush job because I’m much too lazy to start it now), and an exam in early November, and then I’m free.

Free to do what though, that is the question. While I have some tentative plans lined up for the next few months (birthday celebrations, possible extended road trip up to Sydney with some girl friends, a trip to Adelaide in February, and the ubiquitous four to five days at work each week, with the possibility of volunteering a couple of hours a week at my local MP’s office), it will otherwise be a rush of job applications, study applications and self-improvement (i.e. reading a lot of non-fiction and swimming a lot of laps).

I do have two vaguely new and interesting plans, both of which will involve online enterprises. The first, I’d like to work on improving my Chinese by working on translations of Chinese pop songs. I’d like to provide translations on this blog that have the Chinese characters, the ping yin, and the English meaning of the lyrics. Ideally I’d be able to do this at the rate of one a week, though in reality, I’ll probably procrastinate and not do this.

The second involves my ideal part-time job, as an online seller of clothing and accessories. The way I figure it, my skills in life lie primarily in the “saving money by bargain shopping” field. Why not do something that parlays this skill into a viable money-making venture? What I aim to do is shop the way I do now – getting items at 75% off, 80% off, 90% off. What I’ll do then, is list all these items on eBay, and hopefully make at least 50% profit on top of the original price (e.g. sell at 150% of original price), after seller fees and the like.

So those are my plans for the next couple of months, assuming no spanner in the works.

Question of the Week: What do you have planned for the next couple of months?

  1. LETS GO SWIMMING!

Next few months? Well, finishing this semester on the 31st and them being lazy till the end of Feb. Working 2-3 days a week, hoping to do some random volunteering so that the resume looks better, and possibly a trip to Queensland with a friend ^_^

  2. next few months….pass my classes *damn physics* and..hmmm, decide on future professional or grad school and take corresponding entrance exam…probably should study for that too. It worries me that everyone is like…starting their med school apps already. I’m like, “WTF I haven’t even decided on what to do!”

Oh and my favorite time of the year is coming up *Halloween through Christmas* I have no plans yet, but I hope it’ll be nice.

  3. Hmm…let’s see…watch a friend’s dog and go to Japan Expo next month. :D That’s about it.

  4. I’m going to feel sorry for myself for three months because even after two and a half years I’m still sick and I can’t get a god damn job. On the bright side, even though I’ll have bugger all money, I’ll be able to completely relax and it might do something for my health.

I’m going up north to the best city in NZ for 5 days at the end of November though, which is going to be great because I haven’t been since January 2005. I get to see all my friends from high school and all the places with special memories attached to them. *has the warm and fuzzies*

Anyway, I said I was going to bed, but my feed reader distracted me.

  5. Uni is also ending in a couple of weeks and then it will be holidays~ slim possibility of China/HK trip (hopefully.. great opportunity to improve Chinese!)..

Then most probably either if that doesn’t happen and after the trip, work, work and more work. Have money so I can buy stuff! ^^ And possibly save so I won’t dip back into negativity that is the overdraft =)

And of course relax and hopefully catch up and do stuff with friends ^_^

    I can’t wait!

  6. Try not do die of stress before/during my exams. Oh, and Christmas. :)

  7. Pass classes and survive break and holidays.

  8. My major (though a bit far off) plans right now involve school and making plans for the possibility of moving to San Francisco by the fall of next year.

My immediate plans right now is to get my online portfolio up and running in an effort to pick up more freelance gigs.

  9. I’m trying to make a 4.0 this semester, so that’s my biggest goal. I’m also working on a paper with a professor of mine that we hope to get published. Um… I have a book cover to design… and I guess that’s about it. My life is pretty boring! Haha…

  10. In the next few months, I have some tests, and I’ll probably end up going to a few movies and to Quebec. That’s about it. I lead an excruciatingly boring life.

I think the online selling idea is great! I know you’d be able to find unbelievably discounted items, so surely you would make a profit!

  11. Ooh, I think the translations through songs sounds really interesting and fun!

I haven’t planned too much. I’d like to save some money now that I have a decent job and I want to look into teaching in New Zealand since I plan to move there before August next year. Hopefully I will be able to find a teaching job there or at least find more information on how to go about doing so. I guess my only other goal is my current weight loss goals, but that’s an ongoing battle (we’ll leave it at that).

  12. Stuff Asian People Like! I’m a fan of anything with “Stuff ______ People Like” in it’s title.

And ahh, reselling clothing! Great idea, I’d love to get into that myself if there were any thrift stores where I live, or if I could bear to part with anything I buy.

  13. There’s a Stuff Asian People Like? Awesome! One more way to procrastinate! With that being said, I plan to study for the next couple of months. Boring, but it’s senior year and the grades count.

Ah, and joining a fitness club. Yes.

And I like that shopping business plan thing that you have. I hope you go through with it, it sounds really interesting, and your bargain finds are always awesome. Good luck with things! :D

  14. Work? boooo. Still thinking of where to go on holidays, besides the normal tennis season trip/s. :)

The lyrics translation is a good idea, I know pinyin & translations pop around in various forums/sites, but they really need to be all in one place!

    kat on October 15, 2008 #

  15. Ooh, the translation of Chinese songs sounds interesting, although I’m not really familiar with any Chinese pop songs. I guess it’d be a good opportunity for me to get to know some.

My goal for the next few months is pretty simple: finish college applications (though that implies that I’ve started, which I haven’t…yet). :D

  16. good luck with school. i’ve had my fair share of school work and im glad to be on semester break right now phew. i wish it never ends. oooh sounds fun that youre heading on a roadtrip pretty much around australia. that sounds exciting and somehting to look forward to :)

  17. Definitely aim to do both! Especially the latter plan… I mean, if you can make money sitting in front of your computer doing what you love to do, what’s there to lose?

I don’t have any definite plans all… other than don’t flunk out of the university in my freshman year. I think I’d like to exercise more. And I really want to turn an entire wall of my room into a map of the world. That’s about it. God, what a riveting life I do lead…

  18. My holiday plans also involve work (assuming I get the job I’m interviewing for) and the beach but mygod, you are hardcore. Have I mentioned how much I envy you that hardcoreness? Consider it said.

Yay for Chinese song translations- I suppose you’ll do (more) obscure ones that don’t have translations online (that are readily found) otherwise I’d suggest Tong Hua (which you surely must know?)

Good luck w/ Honours apps! And SYDNEY! If you have a free day w/o your gfs and want to hit up the markets or something (and chocolate cafes, i know all of them), then look me up!
