October 13 2008: Jingwen’s Competition #6

Regarding my “outfit for the races” post two days ago, Bobbi-Lee commented that the bulk of it consisted of sale items, that wouldn’t necessarily be published in the paper as not everyone can go to a sale! An entirely valid point, which is why I now present to you an outfit for the races made up entirely of full-price, purchased on eBay, and thrifted from second-hand store items (the type of items that the paper published), that still falls under the $100AUD outfit threshold.

discount outfit for the races

  1. Second-hand gold dress by Review – purchased on eBay for $16AUD
  2. Snakeskin clutch by Olga Berg – thrifted from an opshop on High St, Ashburton, Melbourne for $8AUD
  3. Black diamante-studded heels from Payless Shoes – purchased in store for $49.95AUD five years ago for a school formal
  4. Fake pearl and gold charm fob necklace, $3AUD thrifted from the Salvos store

With the previously mentioned $15AUD self-created headpiece from Spotlight, that brings the total to: $91.95AUD.

Which brings me to an idea which may or may not work. Probably the latter due to the effort it’ll take the readers of this blog, but, we’ll see. Idea explained below, and will make up my new competition for this month.

What It Is

A competition run by yours truly, in order to give current, and potential, readers of Jingwen a tangible prize. Prizes will differ from month to month. Some may only be suitable for a certain demographic, others will be gender and age neutral.

The Prize

This month’s prize will be something bought by myself, for you. The item will be purchased following my own bargain shopping rules, which regular visitors will be well familiar with. It might be purchased on extreme discount (e.g. 75% off the original reduced price), thrifted (e.g. bought from a second-hand store), or off eBay. The item will be tailored to yourself as an individual, and I will try to make it something that you could make regular use of.

How To Win

Following my example above, you will have to create an outfit for the races (e.g. dressy, cocktail, etc.) out of completely thrifted, heavily discounted, or eBay items. This outfit can either be for a female, or a male, as long as the total price for the outfit (clothes, shoes, handbag, headpiece) doesn’t exceed $100AUD.

Note that the individual items don’t have to be something you actually own – as long as you can furnish some proof as to the price (e.g. link me to an eBay auction or an online shop), the outfit will be eligible to win the prize. What I do require are photos of all items you include in your outfit (polyvore is a great way of pulling it all together), as well as details of how much each item cost and where it came from.

You will need to email me at acchamanda@gmail.com with:

  1. Your full name
  2. Your postal address
  3. A URL (if applicable)
  4. The complete outfit

You will also need to comment on any entry on this blog between the 13th of October 2008 and 30th of November 2008 in order to qualify for the draw.

Summary

The winner of this competition will be chosen on the 30th of November 2008, based on what I believe to be the best, or most original, outfit. You will be notified by email, where I will also ask you a few further questions in order to better choose a winning item for you. The winner will also be announced on this blog. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to address them here in the comments for this entry. Spread the word, and good luck!

  1. This is one of the most original contests I’ve seen in a while. I’m horrible at outfits but I’ll see what I can do. Maybe you could make a cool posts with all the entries at some point, even if it’s after the contest? I’d be eager to see what people come up with.

Reply: Yeah, I’m planning a big roundup post, depending on how many entries I get! :)

  2. oooh this sounds so fun! I think I might enter this one *cough*instead of studying*cough*. But do you want the outfit to be dressy, like the one above, or can it be casual (but still more than t-shirt and jeans)? I’d like to eventually see everyone’s ideas too!

Reply: Oops, should have clarified! I edited the post – it’s outfits for the races, i.e. dressy, cocktail-type wear.

  3. This has got to be the best original contest I have seen. I’m not good at creating dressy outfits…I’m so out of the loop with fashion I don’t even know what’s ‘in’ anymore.

Reply: Oh, you can do it too! Dress, heels, shoes, hat…it’s not hard! The best fashion is timeless anyway. :)

  4. Aha! Shopping on a budget is something I can do..

Reply: Hehe, I knew you’d be up for this Shen!

  5. This could be another handy way to procrastinate. ;)

Reply: I aim to aid procrastination!

  6. Sounds fun. :) I like this contest and shopping… I’d be curious to see what everyone comes up with.

Reply: I hope you’re going to enter as well!

  7. I’m terrible at styling, it’s generally jeans and a shirt or a nice two piece suit for me but hey I can always try :).

Reply: No harm in trying! :)

  8. Occasionally reading your blog must be part of the reason why I’m feeling so fashion-less and actually caring about that fact lately. Thanks for making me feel so uncultured. :P Will be interested in seeing the entries.

Reply: Well, fashion is subjective! :) I’m sure yours is A-OK. Sure you don’t want to give it a try?

  9. Nice contest! I buy clothes so seldom, I don’t even know when I last spent money on them. I wonder what people come up with :D

Reply: It doesn’t have to be something you already own! :) You could always do a mock outfit out of things you find online…

  10. Yet another great outfit : ) I wish I could enter you’re competetion!! I have so many nice dresses, yet not a single pair of decent heels…and no bag or anything. I love buying pretty clothes, but I fail at accesories.. in the end I’d have to turn up to the races in my posh dress and trainers XD Will look forward to the entries though! :D

Reply: If you can find accessories online that fit under the $100 threshold, that’s always an option too! Pair an existing dress with some cyber heels and bag! :)

  11. Ooh, personally I’m not dressy; I have a fashion sense of that of a rock. Still, I know how to choose dresses (I’m my mother’s critic, in fact). I can probably pull this off. I think I’ll join. :p

One problem though: we have these bargain/thrift stores we call ukay-ukay/wagwagan. If you want to know more about them, here’s a short description, and here’s a short video. They (usually/99% of the time) don’t hand out receipts though. What would be considered proof of purchase then? ;)

Reply: With thrift store items, as long as you can let me know how much it was, where/when you bought it, that’d be fine. :) With ebay or online items though, you’ll have to link me to it!

  12. Well, this will be difficult to do as I’m American and have no idea what is considered proper racewear beyond what we would wear to events like the Kentucky Derby and whatnot… which is more like long, flowy dresses, big sunhats, gloves, pearls, etc… But I’m going to try this out (already have an outfit together… just have to piece it up…). I’m excited :)

Maybe I’ll even (attempt) to draw the finished product. It’s been a while since I’ve attempted fashion drawings…

Reply: Racewear in Australia is really just “cocktail”. A dressy dress (e.g. not a plain cotton sundress) is all it is.

  13. Can I design a fascinator instead of putting together something pretty?

I reckon you’ll look pretty hot if you dressed like that to the carnival :)

Reply: Yeah, of course! But only if you agree to come to my party. :)

    monkee on October 14 2008 #

  14. Positive I can’t try — no idea what the exchange rate is, so don’t know what $100AUD in USD is ;)

    Stephanie on October 14 2008 #

  15. You definitely need to add one of these to the outfit! :P
