October 12 2008: Link Dump no.2

Some interesting political, racial, social, articles and websites (in my biased opinion) for your perusal.

  1. Sam Davies: Why The French Vote Democrat
Why the rest of the world wants someone with a focus on diplomacy rather than firepower in their foreign policy credentials as the next American president.
  2. Paul Street: White America Lives in Vicious Racial Denial – Obama Is Making It Worse
By trying to deny his ‘blackness’, Obama is very much pandering to the delusions of white America when it comes to racial equality - there’s still a very long way to go for equality, and it should be placed more to the front of his agenda.
  3. Helen Philpot: Sarah Palin is a Bitch…there I said it
Straight-talk from eighty-two-year-old women whose lived through fourteen administrations. She knows her shit! Don’t just read this particular entry either - read all her other, more recent, blog entries.
  4. Murder Burger et al.
I think this blog is ostensibly the site of a burger shop in New Zealand, but otherwise, it seems like a place where random humourous images are posted. It manages to give me my daily dose of lulz.
  5. Youtube: Minnesota GOP on Ashwin Madia
Ashwin Madia is an Democrat running for Congress in Minnesota who just happens to be of Indian heritage. The video clip linked above are GOP members who take a decidedly racist turn in their campaign, claiming that “he’s just not one of us”, because he’s not a suburban family with kids and a mortgage. Minnesotan readers of this blog: vote Ashwin Madia and show that racism is not tolerated in today’s society.
  6. Luke Whitington: A democratic republic
Whitington makes an inspired argument that uses the very basis of democracy, but there’s too many flaws in his suggestion, based particularly on the flaws in Australian society - I for one, wouldn’t place the ability to control the Australian army in the hands of say, a member of the One Nation party, or those who were in the Cronulla riots, etc.
  7. Kate de Brito: I can’t fit in with Aussies because I’m an Asian girl
It’s an “Dear Abby” type of column, but this particular article was really touching. In my younger years, I could most definitely have related to what the letter writer is saying, as an older, and hopefully more mature first-generation Australasian, I can say that the advice given is brilliant.
  8. Carmen Van Kerckhove: An open letter to white voters, or what McCain really thinks of you
Why you should vote for a candidate who respects you as an American, not someone who thinks only the worst of you.
  9. 8asians: South Park: “The China Probrem” episode
It took me about a day to download the episode on my dialup connection, but I agree with this article - it could have had the potential to go very, very wrong, but by the end, its morals are in the right place. Very amusing.
  10. Hollyscoop: Pussycat Dolls Want Sarah Palin
Just for lulz after the sombreness of the above links. At least she has career options…
