Tax Returned
October 10, 2008 | Filed under Money
I received a letter in the mail yesterday. If it had been a face-to-face conversation, I expect it would have gone something like this:
- Australian Tax Office: We’ve just assessed your income for the 07/08 financial year, and surprise!
- Amanda: Oooh, a surprise! What is it?
- ATO: You get a cheque from us!
- Amanda: Oh, yay money!
- ATO: But, it’s not just any money! It’s far more than your last tax return – rather than a paltry $400AUD, we’re giving you $1029.90AUD this year!
- Amanda: :O :O :O :O
- ATO: Disclaimer: This amount is money you actually earned yourself. We just overtaxed you during the year! Ha ha ha! You don’t mind do you?
- Amanda: Um…
I love unexpected money. People really should surprise me with money more often. Like, randomly put amounts into my Paypal account, which is linked to my email: acchamanda@gmail.com. Not that I’m hinting or anything. Nuh uh. No sirree.

The biggest tax return I ever got was $140. But then again, I only earned $5000 in that year.
I could do with your tax return right now.

Xuan: Hi, I’m jealous.
I agree with Nellie. We could do with your tax return right now.

Alright, it’s a political badge thing (for lack of a better word)…but it is very commercial-ad-like.
Reply: It’s something I’m willing to risk, just to get him voted into office!

Money is always nice, but if it turns out to be money the tax office ‘borrowed’ off you it takes the fun away a bit. You should ask for interest over that amount, as they took that away from you this past year too ;)
Reply: I totally should! There’s at least $50 interest there…

I have NEVER gotten money back. 2 reasons: the two years I have had to send in my tax thing, my job screwed me and put me on the thingy where you claim how many people and I was taxed less during the year, and my dad claimed me as a dependant both years so that I couldnt claim the money I spent on my education as a deduction.
First year I paid 400 dollars and the second I paid 600 dollars.
I got the thing straightened out with work, and my dad SAYS he wont claim me this year, so hopefully Ill at least break even, so that I dont hafta send off more money… *sigh*

Mine was an insulting $19 last year. Haha I almost didn’t want to mail the thing asking for it because it felt like it was going to cost me more to actually send the damn thing.
That is a lot of money though. Maybe you can get another fur coat? :P

I got $20 the only year I worked… actually it wasn’t even a year.
But a 1000, that’s really good! It’s not exactly free money, but it doesn’t matter, at least it’s back in your hands.

Holy shiiiiet! That’s the biggest tax return I’ve ever heard of. Well, actually… that’s the only one I found out the actual amount of xD. Still… lol. I can’t wait to get mine when I turn 18 next year.

Ooh lucky you. I was so surprised with my tax return this year too…I got $1800 back and I was only expecting around $500.

Surprise money is always good, especially when it comes in the thousands. :D
I find it kind of funny that all the money I ever receive is a surprise to me. As in, I somehow forget that working = money, so whenever I get my weekly or monthly cheques, I’m always pleasantly surprised. Same thing with interest in savings accounts!

My sister purposely overpays her taxes so she can get a refund and will have extra money when she needs it most.

Haha, that is awesome! Things like that always make things brighter.

What an awesome figure for a tax return. I wonder if you’re allowing yourself to a little indulgence, or if that is going straight into your new fund for your future home =P knowing you, the majority is probably going into the latter since you’re so efficient at anything involving spending =D
Reply: Heh, yeah it’s all going into ‘the fund’. :P
