I’m Sending The Fur Flying

I’ve been on a hunt for the past five years. It’s been a long search, I look in every single shop that I go into, and my budget for this item has been significantly higher than I would allow for any other item. It’s a sort of “holy grail” for me, that elusive search for that one magical item. A fur coat.
Animal rights activists will probably be up in arms about this desire of mine, but eh, whatever. Blow me. I already own a black mink thigh-length coat, passed down from my mother as the only family heirloom of monetary value, as my father used to be a furrier back in Hong Kong. I also have a rabbit fur muffler, that my uncle in Hong Kong (still a furrier, it’s kind of the family trade) sent me for my 18th birthday. What I needed though, was a shorter, waist/hip-length, neutral coloured fur coat (preferably 100% real fur, but I was happy to be flexible on that) that I could rug myself up in on cold winter nights when I’m a girl about town, in a non-prostitute type of way.

I struck the jackpot today. Found in an op shop (thrift shop, second-hand store, etc.) today for the outrageously inexpensive sum of $12AUD, this deliciously warm fur jacket. The photo doesn’t show it well, but the colours are amazing – from one angle, it looks copper-coloured, from another grey, from yet another, white.
I was unsure about the makeup of the material, as tags had been cut off sometime in its past life as someone else’s possession. By the judgement of my father, the master furrier though, it’s a combination of real (most likely fox) fur and acrylic, likely on a 50/50 basis. For $12AUD, I’m not going to be disappointed that it’s not 100% animal fur. Pity we’re going into summer now, but it’s now hanging in my closet waiting for next year’s winter.
Now to find the perfect worn and slouchy biker leather jacket…

I’m definitely anti-fur. But, I currently eat beef and chicken and pork, so I can’t really say anything. :P It looks nice! Not my style (even 100% acrylic, it wouldn’t be my thing) though.

I personally love my mink earmuffs. Very warm.

wow, that is a great deal, but I’m a NO on fur, haha. Unless it’s faux. It looks great though.

Not a fan of fur, it doesn’t seem.. attractive to me, but to each their own! It certainly looks warm and comfy :)

Well, I’m anti-fur and anti-hunt, but to each his own. I personally think fur coats are ugly and they make people look fat.
How would you combine it? Many people are wearing fur vests here, and they look so cool on them. Yours is a little…classic?

That’s a very beautiful jacket. Congratulations on your amazing find! I just bought a fur stole in a similar colour to go with my wedding outfit. :)

Wear this fur if you come up to Sydney “in the week immediately following the parteh!”! :D
But yes, nice jacket. :) I’m not a fur person myself, but it looks rather sexy.

That coloring sounds very neat. Good luck finding your biker jacket!

Oooh it looks warm and beautiful! I don’t wear fur though. I mean, I eat meat :D But I just can’t bring myself to wear fur.

I think fur clothing looks tacky, and it’s not just because animals die for your fashion. :P I just think they’re highly unattractive.

I don’t know why several people have compared wearing fur to eating meat in the comments, it’s a totally different industry. The better an animal is treated, the better the quality of the meat. Therefore it’s better for farmers to treat their meat well. (There’s no point denying that animal cruelty doesn’t exist, of course, but lets assume that not all farmers take part in it.) The wearing of fur is more comparable to wearing leather… in which case it’s virtually irrelevant how the cow is treated because the end result will always be leather. How many of your fur haters here wear leather? All of them, no doubt.
I don’t like fur, I think it looks ugly, but making comparisons based on whether or not a person eats meat is just plain silly.

Murderer? Right.. kill off those evil acrylics.
I’m with you on the “blow me” comment. Wear this jacket in good health. And see what your uncle can provide to spruce up your collection.

@ Jem – I think maybe they equate eating meat with wearing fur because either way, an animal had to die for you to eat its meat or wear its fur, regardless of how it was treated while it was alive.
I’m not a fan of real fur (and for the record, since everyone seems to be stating it – I don’t eat meat, wear fur, and with exception to the suede soles of my dance shoes (the only kind they make, unfortunately), own no leather) … but I love faux fur accents – trim on boots, coats, etc.
In my opinion, if you’re going to buy fur, at least buy it second-hand… that way you’re not *directly* supporting the industry of killing animals for fashion. (Although I suppose that might almost be a negative point for you, considering you have family members in the industry. :P)
I’m interesting in seeing how you wear the coat! I’m not a short-coat kind of person (unless its casual – otherwise, I go for just-above-the-knee length) so i’m not entirely sure how I’d wear it… with a belt? wrapped? open?
