October 6 2008: Rain-Soaked Phone (The Ultimate In Smrtness)

Holy. Shit.

I was looking for my mobile phone all morning - it had somehow gone missing in between the time that I left my nannying job last night, and the time I woke up this morning. Totally. Utterly. Missing. Gone. Vanished. Disappeared off the face of the Earth.

Guess where I ended up finding it? Hidden in the long grass on my front lawn. In a puddle, after last night’s rainfall. Entirely soaked, of course. I’m not even going to attempt to figure out how it got there. Needless to say, the screen is now waterlogged, fuzzy and utterly fucked. I’m hoping that it’ll eventually drain away and return to normal, but I’m not holding my breath.

On the bright side, I can still make calls, and can still, sort of, see enough of the screen to send messages, so the basic use of a mobile remains functional. Another silver lining would be the fact that I’m actually due for a free handset upgrade in April of next year, so it could have been worse. I could have fucked it up in the first month of a new contract and have had to purchase a new phone - but rather, I only have six months of my existing contract (24 months) to go, so I can handle having a fucked up phone for this short period of time.

…but I’m still pretty pissed off.

  1. wow, I’m amazed it still works. Since the electronics don’t seem to have been damaged, water is always supposta evaporate, even in room temperature, so maybe it’ll be better after a while! My phone always died about 6 months before our contract ended. That’s what happens when you get 2 year contracts, arg, annoying.

  2. Reminds me of the time when I went to an amusement park and didn’t just get sprayed with water on the waterlog ride… I got soaked. So much so that there was water IN my pockets after I got off the ride. Unfortunately, my phone was in my pocket. It still works even though it lags every now and then.

Anyway, the more it dries, the better it will be. Also, someone once told me that it isn’t a bad idea to blow-dry a wet cellphone. I don’t know if you should risk it though

  3. Stuff ends up in the funkiest places I swear.

  4. Ouch. That is pretty crazy. I am impressed it still works at all, hah!

  5. Ouch! One of my coworkers gave his phone a bath. I remember he ended up drying it on the heater, and everyone kept giving him advice on what not to do.

I don’t know if it’s OK now, though. Good luck holding out till April :P

  6. You’re probably going to kill me for telling you this, but the thing about water damage and phones is that it’s quite possible your phone will be fine for 6 months but its also possible it may just die on you suddenly.

That said. If your phone does die, let me know. I have a spare phone or six (you could call it an occupational hazard), you’re more than welcome to borrow one if need be. ;)

Reply: That sounds great, I might have to take you up on that! Only thing is, I’m locked to 3…do you have any 3 handsets?

  8. I found out on the internet that if your phone was recently in some sort of water accident, you submerge it into a bag of uncooked rice ASAP so the rice could absorb the water.

Sounds weird, but it could be worth a shot.

  9. Well, I’ve recently bought a new phone so I’d be really pissed off if something like that happened to me.

I once dropped mine in the toilet, so I had to throw it away cause it refused to turn on.
Anyway, good luck with keeping it working until April.

  10. I have too many run-ins with water and my phone - even so far as to put it through the wash! :(

The only advice I have is to leave it in an airing cupboard over night or two and the water should evaporate and go back to normal. You should give it a try as you don’t have anything to loose.

Reply: You know, I always read about airing cupboards in English novels…but they don’t build them into Australian homes. :(

  11. That sucks, but at least you can still call and don’t need to purchase another phone yet!

I don’t know what kind of phone you have but it seems that the more ‘older’ models are better protected against water trouble than the newer phones. One of my co-workers dropped her new phone in a cup of coffee last week and it died immediately.

  12. Lucky it didn’t fry as soon as you used it. Someone threw a water bomb at me once, somehow soaking through my bag and settling its way inside my phone. Very sad, very sad. Lol.
Perhaps your phone wanted a bit of sexy times with the grass. mmMMM.

Reply: Ew Jess, last sentence makes me sad. :( :P

  13. I know of many people who have lost their phones to the toilet. Seriously. It sounds funny, but it happens to so many people. I’m careful, although I did drop my iPod in the bath once. Miraculously, it survived….

  14. Wow. That is some luck. Still, six months seems quite a while to continue using a partially broken phone. Here’s to hoping that it clears up for you.

    Erin on October 7 2008 #

  15. I would have been pretty pissed too. Not sure if I could stand having a broken phone for 6 months though!

    Malin on October 7 2008 #

  16. You know they say that after getting your phone wet you should let it dry first before powering it up to decrease the chance of frying it. And drying it with a blow dryer is a preferred method :P

  17. Meep! I’m sorry to read about this. X_X;; Look on the bright side? At least it didn’t fall in the toilet? Couple of my friends were unlucky and that’s what happened to their phone!

  18. [...] My mobile phone seems to be back to normal. The water evaporated from the screen over the course of a couple of days, and it’s working as per usual. Now, all I have to do is make sure I don’t leave it in the garden overnight again during a rainstorm… [...]
