September 27 2008: Blog Demographics

Filed under Online with 17 Comments

Don’t want to toot my own trumpet and declare myself to be psychic or anything (that sounds like a bad euphemism for masturbating…), but your answers to my demographic-mapping questions yesterday were pretty much what I’d imagined. I’m fairly anal about statistics and the like, so I’m always aware of who’s commenting, but it was good to have some confirmation.

So, as an average reader of this blog, you’re most likely:

  1. Female (or gay male)
  2. Twenty-three or younger
  3. From either the Americas (America, Canada, Latin America) or Australia/New Zealand
  4. Found this blog through someone’s blogroll around a year ago
  5. Reading through a feedreader and only coming onto the site when you want to comment

Europe and Asia was surprisingly under-represented in yesterday’s answers, though I know for a fact that a sizeable portion of my regular commenters are from those two continents. Perhaps they were having a commenting off day? I was also surprised to be reminded how many of you have known me for almost three to four years now! A number of you have been with me since my n00by days using Frontpage, then blogging on LiveJournal, while others have been with me since 2005 when I was running Umb-Rella Reviews and perfecting Obsidian Rhapsody. You deserve an award for putting up with me for this long.

It was a relief to know as well, that everything I blog about has some measure of approval from different people. While some enjoy the politics/culture/society entries, others prefer my fashion/shopping/money entries, yet others enjoy anything with sex and humour. Some don’t care what the heck I write about, as long as I write about it with the Amanda touch.

Essentially, I think this means I keep blogging the way I’m currently blogging. I’m not doing anything wrong, though apparently, Lil thinks I need more boobage photos, which can be arranged (NB: Not my boobs).

See? Humour, this blog has it.

September 26 2008: You Ask, I Answer #2.5

Filed under Online with 43 Comments

Just catching up on two questions asked after I posted the first round of answers. I won’t be answering any more questions asked on that entry from now on, so either email me if it’s urgent, or hold onto it until September 13th next year!

What inspired you to start blogging? (asked by Brandy)

Nothing particularly poetic or inspired I’m afraid, I simply wanted to be “one of the crew”. Back in early 2004, I joined a tennis forum dedicated to love of Spanish tennis player Juan Carlos Ferrero. The top people at the forum all had websites of some description - whether it be personal sites, blogspot blogs, tennis fan sites, etc. In April of 2004, I started experimenting with Frontpage and Freewebs. By the end of the year, I was (admittedly, tediously) hand-coding on a subdomain. Blogging beyond standard site updates of “new layout, lulz” didn’t come until mid-2005, and even then it was primarily along the lines of updating about fanlistings I owned, etc.

It wasn’t until early-2006 that I begun blogging on a more personal note on LiveJournal…which ultimately led to blogging on my former personal site (obsidian-rhapsody.com), and then blogging here at Jingwen which has never been anything but a blog. I actually still maintain my LiveJournal, though it now exists primarily as a place where I crosspost my entries here, as well as for memes and the like.

Nowadays, I’d have to say that it’s myself who motivates me to continue blogging. It’s simply become second habit for me to spill my thoughts on whatever subject is plaguing me on whichever day - as natural as brushing one’s teeth before bed for example. Admittedly, the feedback I receive on my entries is important as well.

Where is/are your most ticklish spot(s)? (asked by Vickie)

I’m ticklish all over! I’m actually really sensitive to touch, so any small touch can startle me and make me jump. It’s a distinct disadvantage, especially when you’re naked in bed and engaged in a tickle fight. Unsurprisingly, I always lose…

And now that I’ve finished answering your questions, I’d like to ask you a couple of questions of my own!

  1. How old are you?
  2. Where are you from?
  3. How did you discover my blog? How long ago did you discover it?
  4. Do you visit my blog regularly? If so, how so? (e.g. actually visiting, following RSS feed, etc.)
  5. What kind of entries do you enjoy most?

Help me make Jingwen a better experience for you. This would be an excellent time for any lurkers to de-lurk. I promise I don’t bite!

September 25 2008: QOTW: Connections Of Music And Dance

Filed under Media & Q.O.T.W. with 12 Comments

Okay, I lied. That wasn’t my last post about SYTYCD, but this will be for this year. Maybe.

I’m a Top 40 kind of girl, and I listen to the type of radio stations that alternative indie types like to sneer at. I’m not ashamed of this in any way - you like what you like, and there’s no point in sneering at mainstream music simply because everyone likes it. Everyone has to like it for a reason, whether or not you see it as a legitimate reason. Anyway. The station I listen to often plays music such as:

  1. Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown - No Air
  2. Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love
  3. Duffy - Mercy
  4. Nelly feat. Fergie - Party People

All the above are songs that are not only popular in the music charts, but which were also featured in routines on Season Four of SYTYCD. Now the point of this entry: the quality of the dance is measured by how often it pops into my mind as soon as I hear the song.

For instance, I’ll never again be able to listen to songs like No Air, Bleeding Love, and Mercy without thinking of the dances that went with it. They’re simply inextricably entwined now - Katee and Joshua dance in my mind to No Air, Mark and Chelsea dance to Bleeding Love, and Katee and Twitch dance to Mercy. Songs like Party People however, remain simply a song, as I wasn’t impressed with Comfort and Mark’s dance to it.

Question of the Week: Do you associate particular dances, actions, events, etc. with certain songs?
