QOTW: Connections Of Music And Dance
September 25, 2008 | Filed under Media, Q.O.T.W.
Okay, I lied. That wasn’t my last post about SYTYCD, but this will be for this year. Maybe.
I’m a Top 40 kind of girl, and I listen to the type of radio stations that alternative indie types like to sneer at. I’m not ashamed of this in any way – you like what you like, and there’s no point in sneering at mainstream music simply because everyone likes it. Everyone has to like it for a reason, whether or not you see it as a legitimate reason. Anyway. The station I listen to often plays music such as:
- Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown – No Air
- Leona Lewis – Bleeding Love
- Duffy – Mercy
- Nelly feat. Fergie – Party People
All the above are songs that are not only popular in the music charts, but which were also featured in routines on Season Four of SYTYCD. Now the point of this entry: the quality of the dance is measured by how often it pops into my mind as soon as I hear the song.
For instance, I’ll never again be able to listen to songs like No Air, Bleeding Love, and Mercy without thinking of the dances that went with it. They’re simply inextricably entwined now – Katee and Joshua dance in my mind to No Air, Mark and Chelsea dance to Bleeding Love, and Katee and Twitch dance to Mercy. Songs like Party People however, remain simply a song, as I wasn’t impressed with Comfort and Mark’s dance to it.
Question of the Week: Do you associate particular dances, actions, events, etc. with certain songs?

I will always associate “What Is Love” with this clip from My So-Called Life with Claire Danes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fndKUGADlko (from about 2:30 til the end). :)

I don’t sneer at mainstream music simply because everyone else likes it. I simply don’t like it. :/

oh man yes! For some reason there is always at least one song that I associate with a quarter of uni. Like I’ll hear Gary Jules’ “How Can I Tell You” and I’ll think of Spring quarter of my freshman year at uni. Then more specifically having all that acid/base chemistry to do, lol.
And I loved that dance to Bleeding Love.

I always associate certain songs with certain times in my life, like I will remember the day or the location when I hear a song. Especially old songs that my parents listened to I remember my childhood. Like Elton John’s Crocodile Rock, every time I hear that I remember a party type thing my parents had when I was 7 and all the other parents kids danced around like crazy. Or if I hear a certain Black Eyed Peas song I remember my former best friend from High School.
Even if I did watch SYTYCD I don’t think I would associate a song with a dance, but that’s just me.

There are a few obvious ones, like associating my She’s So High and graduation songs with Year 12. I also associate Adiemus with my trip to China, and when I hear Snow Patrol/Killer’s songs, I associate them back to the live performances I’ve seen but nothing really outside of that.

No, I do not…but I hate, hate, hate Mercy and no air and most Top 40 songs. Why? And why does everybody like them? Cause every single radio station plays the same songs over and over and even over again 24/7. So much, that they get drill into your hear making you like them.

Not dances, but certain feelings / memories come rushing back to me when I hear certain songs. :(

I’m with Vickie: I don’t sneer at mainstream music because everybody likes it, I sneer at it because I can’t stand it. Ever since shifting from Backstreet Boys and such to alternative and indie music, mainstream radiohits have seemed quite empty, pointless and repetative to me…
And to answer your question: Yes, I do associate certain emotions and events to certain songs. I cannot listen to Placebo’s Black Market Music album without going back a few years, imagining myself sitting in a bus going through a countryside where you could see nothing but fields and barns :) And Queens Bohemian Rhapsody always makes me think of Wayne’s World :D

Like Rachael for me there’s no dances or anything, but certain memories or emotions that surface when I listen to certain songs….

I can’t hear Elisa’s “Dancing” without thinking about this. So beautiful. :)

I only associate music with the places/situations I first heard them in, (or possibly overplay them in) – so if I first hear a song being danced/sung to on the TV, then yes, I will always think about that every time I hear the song. Otherwise they’re just summer camp songs, Tuscany on-the-coach songs, I-was-13-and-angsty songs or just sitting-by-the-radio songs :p

I associate both things I’ve seen and things I feel with songs. I also associate things I might feel, at some point in time, with certain songs.
I ‘feel’ songs more than I here them, if you know what I mean… I’ll like a song not based on the music, however gorgeous it may be, but on how it makes me feel. Whether it’s a good or bad feeling I don’t really care… :)
