Financial Advertising Wordplay
August 14, 2008 | Filed under Media
The Financial Review is now my favourite newspaper. Granted, economic news bores me to tears and sends me to sleep, but their advertising in Melbourne of late has been so unique and pun-licious that it tickles my fancy. Adding to the “Makes a big cheese greater” slogan that I saw a few months ago, I have two more slogans to offer you:
- Fertiliser For Market Gardeners
- Tycoon Warning
Do you see the puns and wordplay? Do you? Rather than being a market garden (e.g. fresh produce), they’re referring to the financial market, and how their newspaper will help the reader/gardener fertilise/grow their stocks and shares. Rather than being an official warning about extreme weather conditions (typhoon), it’s an official warning that the superior financial advice offered in their paper will create a business tycoon.
Is it awesome, or is it awesome? I am so impressed by their marketing department right now.

I felt slightly stupid not getting those until you explained them…

haha I see the puns, but for some reason i usually only get them when I read them. If I were to hear it spoken i would be ridiculously slow at figuring it out.

Haaahaha, I got number two and found it quite funny! Yeaa, I’d probably read this stuff if they had titles as clever as those :P

I love puns. I’ll admit that the first one went over my head, but I’m loving the second one!

I think I would have enjoyed these more if school was not about to start in less than a week and a half.
Markets, finance, economy… I never want to see these words again after I graduate.

My brain doesn’t like to click with economics, hence my mother forcing me into doing Commerce next year.
I was a bit slow with those puns, though. I had to read your explanation two times over before actually understanding. Perhaps I should get more sleep.
