July 28 2008: Use Twitter? You’re a Twit.

It seems like everyone and their grandmother are signing up for Twitter. Personally, I can’t quite see the point in letting people know that you “just woke up”, “getting ready for work”, “had a sandwich for lunch”, “going to bed”, “bleeding from the vagina”. Well, perhaps the latter. Everything else is simply irrelevant information that makes you a twit.

I can see the point however, in twittering philosophical thoughts and humourous experiences. “Wondering about point of life”, “crossed new r’ship toilet boundaries”, or “booger size of golf ball in my nose” work well for inciting thought or amusement in others. What a pity that most Twits use their account for the former reason. It’s almost as bad as those who blog about the minutiae of their days, right down to the “Today Sally told me that Mike liked me, but I wasn’t sure how to respond because I still have a crush on Tim”.

Of course, having said all this, I’m probably going to end up signing up for an account sometime in the next month. Hypocrisy, thy name is Amanda.

  1. Yeah, Twitter’s pretty much twittastic unless you have a gigantic social network of friends just as obsessed with themselves as you are, yet still not *actually* social enough to go out and talk to these people in real life, and instead pointlessly “communicate” with them in 140 character blips.

On the other hand, there’s this one girl on my LJ flist who uses Twitter and has some kind of thing that posts that day’s Twitters to her LJ, which provides a neat snapshot of her life sans any real effort on her part.

Speaking of bleeding from the vagina, I hope you’re using mon.thly.info, Amanda. I’m going to be horribly ashamed of you if you’re not.

  2. I only realised this week that I actually have a twitter because I got an email saying someone wanted to follow me. I had/have no idea what that is supposed to mean and really I don’t care. Twitter is so 5 minutes ago.

  3. I have a Plurk account, which is similar to Twitter, and it was a little addicting for a couple weeks.. But you’re right, it’s hard to be interested in when people woke up, and the funny twits are far too few and far between!

  4. I signed up a few months ago and forgot about it. Your blog reminded me to look at it and apparently I’m “quite bored and alone right now” which is very sad indeed. What a twit I was, and thank you for helping me realise that :D

  5. I don’t do twitter because I had a feeling mine was just going to be “going to bed”, “going out” and “going to work” Nothing exciting ever happens to me.

But blogging about the most irrelevant things? Yeah, I’m guilty of that. :P

  6. XD I have a Twitter account, and it can be fun replying to your friends Twits, but other than that . . . it is pointless. X___X

  7. Forget about Twitter – use http://plurk.com :P

  8. Boring people with mundane details of my life is definitely my calling. :P

  9. I never really got the hang of Twitter and I find Plurk more entertaining as far as micro-blogging goes.

  10. Twitter can be useful to follow events or happenings, especially to build up anticipation or hype.

It also generates a lot of attention very quickly – a guy who complained about his internet service got a technician from the provider out to his house on the same day (or a similar story – I can’t be bothered to find the source).

Twitter is probably 98% useless and 2% intuitive.

  11. I don’t have a Twitter account, and will probably never get one. :P The main reason is that I will never, EVER, update it once I get bored of it.

  12. Hi, I just stumbled upon your blog.

The key to enjoying Twitter (and similar microblogging SN sites) is finding and following the interesting people. Yeah, it’s a big challenge to make the mundane sound awesome, but I’ve seen lots of people pull it off. I’m a registered nurse, and I recently discovered the joy of following other registered nurses from all over the world. I love reading about their experiences while they’re on clinical duty, even when they’re just whining about long shifts and toxic patients, because I can relate to them. :)

I also use Twitter because I’m too lazy/don’t have time to write long blog entries these day (most of my shit can be summed up in less than 140 characters anyway), and I love sharing both informative and funny links with my followers.

If you do sign up, hope you enjoy the service. :)

  13. But I like to bore people. :(
I’ve also been guilty of blogging like your example. =\ I think I STILL blog like that, actually.

  14. In my view, Twitter is just a mini-blog. I joined anyways even though I didn’t see the point, but I use it to put random phrases and quotes.

Someone should put a link to this blog entry on their Twitter. xD

  15. I vow NEVER to sign up for Twitter. I’m too boring for that!

Almost as bad are the people who post “___ is taking a shower” or “___ is bored” on Facebook, but at least I care about some of their lives? The only people I’ve seen use Twitter are random people I’ve “met” online, and I have no desire to read about their lunch or sleeping habits. :|

  16. Twitter is what you make of it. If you just want to post boring things, then you’ll be boring. If you want to try and be interesting, then you’ll be interesting.

    My favourite twits are:
    Maren – http://twitter.com/marenrocks
    and Rob – http://twitter.com/robhawkes

  17. I think Twitter and Plurk are good for keeping in touch with friends on the net (if you’re too busy to keep chatting on MSN). You ask for an opinion and you get lots instantly. It’s something to promote websites with as well.

    Rilla on July 29 2008 #

  18. I definitely agree with you. Twitter is a big bunch of pointlessness.

  19. Don’t have a twitter account but all the hubbub makes me want to sign up to see what all the fuss is about. Besides, I don’t need twitter to tell people that I’m bleeding from the vagina. I personally share the news.

  20. Haha, I don’t have a twitter either for the same reason.
Some of them seem so pointless, as they are replying to the comment of person x, who we have no idea is and what the reply is relevant too. I mean reading something like, “haha but bobby said so!” is just a waste of time.

  21. I signed up for Twitter ages ago without knowing what it was for. I decided to use it about half a year later because everyone I know was in there. I did enjoy it, mainly because it’s one way to keep in touch with my online and offline buddies. They “show” what they are outside their blog (like a certain political blogger I know — a very very very respected and famous one in our country — who has quite a very naughty side), and sometimes I find that their interests and mine are similar. It’s about connection, I guess, but true enough that some people really just don’t get the point.

Recently I’m using Plurk (because, again, everyone does. And they actually forced me to, geez). I find it more enjoyable, and more silly, and more time-wasting. It’s fun if you’re into that kind of thing.
