July 11 2008: Re-heeling Boots

I’ve been thinking about buying a new pair of black boots, because I’ve almost worn through the heels of the last pair I bought almost exactly a year ago. Wearing them nearly every day throughout autumn and winter, combined with my terrible way of walking (I drag my heels, even when I try not to) tends to do that to a pair of shoes.

But then I thought – why bother? My boots are fine, the only thing wrong with them is the worn down heel. All I need to do is reheel them and they’ll be fantastic. Which, you know, I would do, if it weren’t for the fact that it would cost almost as much to reheel my boots here in Australia as it would to buy an entirely new pair.

So then, another brainwave! Why not pack them away, and take them back to China with me the next time I return? It’ll cost the equivalent of $10AUD to reheel my boots there, which would be an excellent investment for another year’s worth of wear. In the meantime, I could buy that new pair of boots, and wear them until I, or a family member returns to the motherland and repairs the old pair, at which point, I’ll have two different styles to wear.

PHWOAR PLAN! I’m always surprised by my own brain and the ideas and plans it manages to throw up. You’d think that after twenty-one and a half years, I’d be accustomed to it…but no! I’m a constant enigma!

  1. Lol PHWOAR plan indeed! Good thinking. So much stuff in Asia is so much more economical… but for people who rarely get the chance to go back to Asia (like me, sigh) we just have to put up with how expensive stuff is in Australia. But the price you got them boots for were quite a bargain though.

Dad went back to TW recently, and he’s just been sitting at home watching the shopping channels. And buying EVERYTHING he sees, because everything is cheaper comparatively to Australia lol.

  4. I think it’s the same over here too (it’s definitely the same in Plymouth!)! It’s much cheaper to buy yourself a whole new whatever, than to get it fixed.

I’m planning on doing something similar with a top I own. I love it and wore it almost all the time, until the zip broke. Hopefully, buying a new zip won’t cost as much as the top did!

  5. Great plan :D Getting shoes re-heeled is like getting brand new shoes but with the rest of the shoe already worn in = perfection. Good luck with finding new ones! Will you be able to hold out till Myer get their summer stock? Fantastic boot sale!

  6. It’s ridiculous that getting shoes repaired costs almost as much as buying a brand new pair. Consumerism ftl. You’re lucky to be going somewhere the prizes are reasonable. :)

  7. I love boots as well, and am so pissed mine have a hole near the sole of one of them. I’m trying to convince myself to go an repair them… but somehow I always have something else to do.
