Drinking And Driving
July 8, 2008 | Filed under Life
According to this funny piece of plastic that I received in the mail today, I’m now off my probationary licence, and am now a fully qualified driver. Is it bad that the first thing that popped into my mind upon receiving it in the mail was “Wow, now I can actually drink and drive!”?

While I’m certainly no raging alcoholic who’s going to down a bottle of spirits on a night out, it’ll be nice to finally be able to have a glass of wine with dinner when with friends, without worrying about how I’ll get home that night. My life is simple, I don’t ask much. The new drinking status that comes with this piece of plastic is enough to keep me happy for quite a while.

It’s allowed to drink and drive in Australia? *confused*
Reply: Oh, it’s strictly monitored. You’re not allowed to drink a single drop when on your probationary licence, but when you’re on your full licence, you’re allowed about the equivalent of one standard drink every two hours – or a glass of wine with dinner. :)

LOL! Now you don’t have to depend on other people to take you back home…
… As long as you don’t get completely plastered, that is :D
That’s what usually sucks about going drinking with other people — waiting on them!

I was confused too, I was like huh? Drinking and driving?? Americans are very against it. Are there a lot of drinking and driving accidents in Australia?

does your driver’s license have pink on it? Ours is just yellow (at least for California)…I didn’t know this so I wore an almost identical pale yellow shirt. haha, at least the pic background was blue.
I was happy when I finally reached the 1 yr mark and was able to drive others around. Then I passed the “provisional until 18.” Though I could totally see myself getting stopped because someone thinks I’m a 14 yr taking her mom’s car for a joy ride, haha.

Reply: Is that an invite? :P

Congratulations! Now you can drink and drive! Meanwhile, I can’t even drive, though I can drink just fine. :D

I’m horrified by the fact that there are people who still believe that it’s OK to drink and drive even if it’s just one glass of wine.
I believe that if you get behind the wheel of a car you shouldn’t drink alcohol period, not even one glass. A car can (and is) a deadly weapon in the hands of someone who can’t control it. And let’s face it, even one glass of alcohol can cause you to NOT have control of the car. Even if you believe you have that control.

Amanda, you make me sad sometimes. If you even have 0.0000000001% alcohol in your bloodstream, you shouldn’t be driving. I sure as hell know I wouldn’t risk it. :(
Reply: Just as you know how much alcohol you can personally handle (apparently, none), so do I know through years of experience how much I can personally handle. When you’ve experienced the way my body processes alcohol, I’d be happy for you to criticise my road-authority-sanctioned actions then. :)
