June 30 2008: Someday, My Prince Will Come

I watched Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs again today, in a vain attempt to reconnect to my childhood. It should be noted that a large part of it was made up of endless re-viewings of my VHS copy of the movie, memorising every line and fantasising that some day, I too would be awakened with a kiss from a dream prince who would sweep me off my feet and away to a kingdom far away. Often, this prince would take the guise of Prince Harry.

With that said though, I wonder how many young girls were also fooled by this fairytale ending…by any fairytale ending. How many, after watching Disney movies, have grown up to believe that their prince will still come to find them despite evidence to the contrary (e.g. divorce rates)?

Some day my prince will come
Some day we’ll meet again
And away to his castle we’ll go
To be happy forever I know

Some day when spring is here
We’ll find our love anew
And the birds will sing
And wedding bells will ring
Some day when my dreams come true

But don’t we as grown women still dream of the fairytale ending? Why do romantic movies with predictable endings of the lovers reuniting do so well at the box office? Why does Disney continue to profit off the fairytale ending with movies like Enchanted? Why are the concepts of true love and soul mates still so revered?

But the most important question: why does this imaginary prince of mine still take the guise of Prince Harry, and why hasn’t he come for me yet?

  1. I know how to play that song on the piano!! and lol Harry! at least he’s not going bald.

I dunno, I guess we all want to believe in the best outcome (prince charming) even though we know the hard facts of reality. I know my grandparents kinda had this “love at first sight” thing and have been together for 60+ yrs. So I have a little bit of reality that helps me hold onto the dream ;)

  2. Because you like them of tall, pasty and ginger?

Wait, those kind are not particularly hard to find.

I can’t say why he hasn’t come for you yet though. Maybe because you’re only 21 and there’s plenty of time for that to happen.

  4. Yeah, I guess you can say I’ve fallen for the “happy ending” foolishness that fairy tale movies have shown me over the years BUT I think it’s not necessarily a bad thing to think that you can have a relatively happy ending as long as you realize that it’s not going to be movie-perfect.

The whole prince charming bit coming for you will happen (and of course no one can tell when — you still have lots of time) but he might not be Prince Harry.

  5. I don’t like romantic movies anyway, they are to soppy for my liking. Maybe it’s because it’s so far from reality (although I do like fantasy movies like Stardust etc), or maybe I’m too realistic and I know that these things just don’t happen in real life.

Prince Harry? XD XD You crack me up. :3

I’ve given up on that whole fairytale crap Disney likes to put up. Sure, they are nice to imagine, but that’s exactly what it will always be: imaginary.

You know it’s been ages since I’ve seen this movie. I don’t even know how that song goes! X__X;; I personally prefer Beauty and the Beast myself. Or Robin Hood. XD

  7. Chick flicks are the optimistic person’s Wuthering Heights. You can have your fairytale, give me angsty romance any day.

My prince has always been Andrea Casiraghi. Understood that descended from royalty =/= prince, but my aim is true. Besides he isn’t Harry :p

  8. Prince Harry is so adorable, I have to agree with you. Much more than Prince William, to be honest.

I hate it when movies have bad endings.. I pay the $7.50 so I can forget about real life for a while! Thus, happy, clichéd, chick flicky endings are a must!

Reply: My god, I wish I could pay $7.50 for a movie ticket. :S We’re paying about $13-$17 here in Australia!

  9. You know, I was SO mad at all the Disney movies when I turned 16 and still hadn’t found the love of my life. And then hit 17 and then 18. It was like the magical find love number and I hadn’t found it yet.

  10. I like the fairytale ending because life is a big cold bitch who repeatedly likes to kick people in the nads, thus we watch movies for the happy endings because life gives us plenty of the unhappy ones.

    Also, Prince Harry = YUM!!
