Certificate III in Music Industry
April 7, 2008 | Filed under Media, Uni/Work
I’ve just returned from the initial meet-and-greet for a short course I’ve just signed up to complete. Provided free of charge for youths living in the Greater Dandenong region of Melbourne by the local council and Ausmusic, the six month program (one session a week, every Monday night) will see the participants walk away with a completed Certificate III in Music Industry. This is no small thing – it’s a nationally accredited qualification, and if completed under normal circumstances at a tertiary institution, would cost well over a thousand dollars.
According to the website for the course:
Upon Completion of Certificate III in Music Industry, students will be able to:
- Gain an insight into the industry sectors and career opportunities
- Explain how the music industry works in their local environment
- Identify music styles, production processes and promotional opportunities
- Gain basic skills in technology and/or business practice
- Demonstrate appropriate health, safety and security procedures
- Work with others through organising a music act and event
I have to admit, the main reason I signed up to be part of this course is because it’s free of charge. It’s something new and different; I’m not musically talented in any way (those who have heard me sing will attest to this!) so I may, quite likely, phail at the course. Listening to the coordinator explain things like amps, cables, sound boards, lighting boards, and so on and so forth, I was…entirely out of my element, which is not something that happens to me often.
However…you never know until you try, correct? It sounds like remarkable fun – I’m particularly looking forward to showing off my organising skills in organising a music act and event. Wheee!

If you fail a free course, who cares?!
Opportunities are opportunities. Carpe diem and all that.

Awesome. Once you’re done let’s start a record label.

Oh, wow, that sounds awesome! I took broadcasting in high school, and my school had the best program in the city. So, when I hear stuff about amps, cables, sound boards, lighting boards, etc. I essentially light up and get this odd hungry feeling in my stomach that can only be filled by adjusting levels and wiring for sound… :D

My best friend is a sound tech. I’m so jealous of him…
But.. he teaches me stuff all the time. It’s pretty cool.
