March 27 2008: QOTW: Drive To Sing

Driving home from work today, I was, as usual, singing along to the radio. And, just so we’re clear, nothing beats the commercial Top 40 stations for drive-friendly music especially when the drive time show is hosted by the two funniest guys in the world, both of whom I want to procreate with.

I know that I can’t be the only one who sings along to the radio, yet up till today, I’ve only ever noticed weird glances from people, along the lines of “Why the fuck is this demure-looking Asian girl singing about smacking it on the floor and liking the way you do me this?”. It, and pretty much anything to do with my personality, is totally at odds with the way I look. I’m pretty much the walking equivalent of seeing a toddler pushing crack.

In any case…singing along to the new song by Madonna and Justin Timberlake (”4 Minutes”) playing from my car speakers today, I casually looked over to the next lane when stuck in a traffic jam. The girl in the white Corolla next to me is singing along as well. I can see her lips moving in sync to the song. And when that part of the song comes up where Justin goes “Ma-donnaaaaa” with that little beat in the middle? We both did this head jerk/Bangles-esque “Walk Like An Egyptian” thing with the line, entirely in sync.

I feel like we really connected.

Question of the Week: Do you sing along to music in the car or in the shower? If so, what do you sing?

I don’t have a car (because I don’t need one), but whenever I drive with my mother’s car to pick up a brother from the train station, I sing along pretty loudly to my specifically for my mother’s car made compilations of my favorite music.
Singing while driving is a lot of fun :D

I don’t sing in the shower though, because there’s no music there and singing in my bathroom scarily amplifies my voice and it sounds really weird…

Why yes. I do merrily sing in friends’ cars and in the shower.

Mostly I sing obnoxious 90s songs in the shower, completely and purposefully off-tune so I can take the piss out of them (and myself, in the process).

In cars: HAS. TO. BE. DON’T STOP THE MUSIC BY RIHANNA. And anything else that’s equally catchy and makes you want to look a little nuts in front of other respectable-looking drivers and commuters.

I play heavy metal/Queen in the car and dance to it. Not whilst driving of course. I love getting odd looks out of gormless commuters.

The car? The shower? YES! Everywhere else? YES! I sing, constantly. I’m often told that I opt more for singing and dancing than I do talking and walking! :P

I like to sing the older songs when they are on. But when my brother is in the car, I sing along with everything… especially songs I don’t know that well. It drives him nuts.

    lol hilarious yet awesome!

Of course! If I can’t listen to my music every minute possible I die inside :P But I hardly listen to the radio anymore, mostly I just hook up my Zen to the aux jack in the car and sing along to the most awesome songs ever. :D

I don’t sing in the shower, although I used to. I like singing in cars, but as I don’t drive, it’s not something I can do very often. I’m way too shy to sing out loud when there are people around. I can sing along to music I listen to on the computer if there’s nobody else in the apartment.

Hamish and Andy can’t be the two funniest guys in the world because those spots are already taken by the two guys on my favorite radio station. ;) I love singing along to the radio in the car, and I love singing random songs in the shower because it makes my voice sound better. :P

If I’m going somewhere by myself in the car, I put on some Paramore and sing. But that rarely happens any more because Sam is always usually with me in the car and his ears aren’t as finely tuned as mine. He can’t handle a little bit of Paramore.

I don’t sing in the shower because unlike my neighbours for me, I actually have respect for them. I really shouldn’t though.

I don’t drive, so I sing in other people’s cars. :P And in the shower. And just whenever. I don’t have anything particular that I like to sing along with - just anything that’s on or is in my head.

I’ve often fantasized about how much I’ll sing when I do drive. There will be so much bad singing!

Lol I listen to 92.9 too and sing along with it all the time. Carl gets annoyed and changes it to some other rock music station. Theres nothing better than singing along to fun top 40 music whilst in the car. I always see others do it too haha at the traffic lights.

God, this is why I love music. It’s power is universal. I don’t tend to sing aloud, but it’s usually pop, the kind of stuff you seem to enjoy.

of course I do, but sometimes I’m afraid of others looking at me through the window and thinking, “WTF is she doing?” so it’s preferably done at night :P I have CDs in my car and I always love singing along to Maroon 5’s Songs About Jane…so damn catchy.

    Music = Life

I think music is such a powerful connector because people acknowledge what you’re feeling! I don’t think I could make it through the day without a song in my head. =P

This vaguely reminds me of the time we pulled up to the traffic lights in the car. I was playing my recorder and my mum was all, “YOU’RE NOT DOING IT RIGHT!” so she took it off me, played it, and was caught by the man in the lorry next to us. Honestly, too funny.

I always sing. If I’m not singing it generally means I’m in the “grjgfkgjfkgjfkgfj” kind of mood. :P

(Love the JT and Madonna song, by the way. They should’ve partnered up with Brit Brit.)

I always sing in the shower and the car, but there was one time that I was riding with a friend who was singing one of those American Idol winners’ songs. We were at a stoplight and our windows were rolled down, and she was just belting it out, when suddenly we realized that the trucker next to us was singing along to OUR music. When he saw we noticed, he honked his horn and gave us a thumbs up. It was awesome.

I sing mostly in the shower, very loud too.

I mouth along to the lyrics while driving in my car. It’s amusing to see people driving and really getting into the music they are listening to. Like when they are singing AND trying to dance along.
