Costume Me

My friend is having a “Come as your favourite movie character/come ready for the Oscars” party for her 21st. Essentially, it’s either ‘wear something outlandish’, or for those who are embarrassed to show up in costume, ballgowns and tuxedos. Obviously, I’m the type of person who would prefer the former. If someone gives me the chance to get in costume, doggarnit, I’m going to take it and go all out!

I’m contemplating a few different costumes:

  1. Catwoman. So, Halle Berry as Catwoman is hardly my favourite movie character, but black plus leather plus catsuit automatically equals hot. Of course, whether this catsuit would actually look hot on someone who isn’t six foot tall with a totally bodacious body is uncertain. Time to go to the local adult store and try on a few outfits methinks.
  2. Joel Goodsen (Tom Cruise) in Risky Business. Pros, it’s simple. Men’s business shirt, socks, sunglasses, and bare legs. What could be easier? Cons, it’s boring. At any costume party, there’s bound to be at least three Joel Goodsen’s in the room.
  3. Mary-Jane Watson in Spiderman (the first installment). I have the red qipao actually, that she wore in the film…obviously not the actual one worn for the movie, but one that’s pretty darn similar! I don’t, obviously, have the flaming red hair, but well, I suppose that’s what temporary hair dye was invented for right?
  4. Holly Golightly. This was really bound to pop up wasn’t it? No costume list compiled by an Asian is complete without a reference to the ethereal beauty that was Audrey Hepburn. This too would be relatively simple – long black dress, black gloves, cigarette holder (which I actually have, though I don’t smoke). However…like Joel Goodsen, there’s always bound to be three Holly Golightly’s at any costume party.
  5. Mia Wallace. No costume party of pretentious university Arts students is complete without at least one reference to the master of gore, Tarantino. The costume itself would be relatively simple – it’s the hairstyle that would be hell to emulate. I suppose I could always buy a wig and trim it to my liking. Hmmm.

There are, obviously, better and more memorable movie characters out there. The ones I’ve listed however, are simply the most simplistic when it comes to creating a costume of that people would immediately associate with that character. I mean, I could wear hooped skirts or what not, but how would people know if I’m Jezebel or Scarlett?

There’s just…so much choice. I’m a bit stuck really. Choices, people? Suggestions for other costumes? Help a girl out.

  1. Why is there not an option up there for you to go as Reese Witherspoon in her bunny outfit a la Bridget Jones? :(

  2. Bridget Jones? I meant Legally Blonde! However, Renee Zelwegger as Bridget Jones is obviously equally as cool. :P

  3. Going with the sexy/scantily clad theme there’s also Jessica Rabbit, Leeloo (moolteepassss), Barbarella…

  4. Amelie? Somebody from Hairspray? Jenna from Waitress? Anne Boleyn? Sarah Connor? Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday?

There’s so many to choose from!

  5. AUDREY HEPBURN! can’t go wrong with her. You can go with some of her other characters (Princess Ann, Eliza, Sabrina) but I definitely think that Holly Golightly is the most recognizable. But maybe you can go as the “sleepy” Holly, you know when Paul first meets her. They even sell her sleep mask:

  6. Ha! I was actually gonna suggest Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction… but you beat me to it. Alternate suggestion? Let’s see… Clementine from Eternal Sunshine? At least you’ll have a lot of colors to choose from when buying a wig.

  7. I’d go with catwoman, honestly.
Outlandish and obvious. Costume parties, to me, are all about showing everyone up and being amazing =)
