March 31 2008: Jingwen’s Competition #3

What It Is

A competition run by yours truly, in order to give current, and potential, readers of Jingwen a tangible prize. Prizes will differ from month to month. Some may only be suitable for a certain demographic, others will be gender and age neutral.

The Prize

This month’s prize, from the “Hollywood” fashion help range, is available to one lucky person. I originally won this pack on an online competition at Missy Confidential, however due to the fact that the size of my mammaries prevents me from going sans brassiere and actually using these products, I have decided to offer them to a reader of this blog instead.

In the pack, you will receive:

  1. Hollywood Fashion Tape (36 Easy-to-Use Clear Double-Stick Strips)
  2. Hollywood Hook-Ups (Bra Converting Clip)
  3. Hollywood Behind The Seams (10 Self-Adhesive, Disposable Apparel Shields)

How To Win

You will need to email me at acchamanda@gmail.com with:

  1. Your full name
  2. Your postal address
  3. A URl (if applicable)
  4. 50 word passage on why you think you deserve to win this prize pack

You will also need to comment on this entry between 31st of March 2008 and 30th of April 2008 in order to qualify for the draw. These comments cannot be along the lines of “Nice site!” or “I agree with this post!” - in short, they must have some substance.

Please note that the comments left on blog entries, as well as email entries, will be deemed to be the property of Jingwen, and will, in all likelihood, be reproduced for public consumption.

Summary

The winner will be determined on the 30th of April 2008, via random “pick a winner out of a hat”. They will be notified by email, and will also be announced on this blog. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to address them here in the comments for this entry. Spread the word, and good luck!

March 31 2008: Big Cheese Grater

There’s this poster advertising the Financial Review newpaper (Australian equivalent of the Wall Street Journal) in a bus shelter that I pass on my way to work. Accompanying an image of the masthead of the newspaper, is a simple phrase (in lowercase Arial, white font) at the bottom of the poster: “Makes a big cheese greater”.

For the longest time, I didn’t understand the phrase, as I kept misreading it as “Makes a big cheese grater”. Obviously, I couldn’t imagine how I could possibly use a newspaper to grate some large pieces of parmesan cheese over my pasta dinners. Or for that matter, why I would even want to use a newspaper for a cheese grater.

Just this morning, I finally realised that it wasn’t in fact, a grater, but rather, it was greater. Following on from that, I then realised that it was a “big cheese” (as in colloquial slang for powerful people), not a big “cheese grater”.

Needless to say, I’m both impressed and disgusted - impressed by the intricacy of their play on words, but disgusted with myself for misreading the phrase that many times. Thus with this in mind, I hereby give up my title of “Most Smrtest Person In The World”, and surrender it to be shared amongst the first ten people to comment on this entry.

March 29 2008: A Death Wish

So, I have a death wish.

Aside from other dangerous things I’ve done in recent months (bungee jumping, canyoning, etc.), and things that I’m already half-booked in to do (swimming with sharks), I’m seriously contemplating two other activities: white water rafting and SKYDIVING FROM 14,000 FEET.

On one of my routine browsing missions through eBay, I came across an auction for a tandem skydiving experience in Penrith, less than an hour out of Sydney. It boasts over a minute free fall at speeds up to 220km per hour, from a height of 14,000 feet. It’s obviously not for the faint-hearted…I’m a bit shaky just thinking about it now. I’ve placed a maximum bid of $250AUD…which is actually really cheap for something as insurance-heavy as skydiving. If I win the auction, I dive. I’m shitting myself just thinking about it now. Reminder to self: clear out your bowels before you dive.

I also came across an auction for a white water rafting voucher - again in Sydney. Again, I’m tempted. I have however, held back on bidding for it until I get the result of the skydiving auction…if I win that, I won’t have enough money for white water rafting as well. It’s one or the other, and since I’m obviously seeking nothing but a wild adrenaline rush, skydiving would be more appropriate than white water rafting.

I don’t know, has anyone else been skydiving before? Can you reassure me better than Amber, who pretty well told me that I’m going to die?
