January 1 2008: To Be Achieved in 2008

And so, we find ourselves facing the beginning of a new year, where many people vow to change their life for the better. I don’t normally believe in making resolutions in the new year, if only because if one wants to significantly change or improve one’s life, it’s something that should be thought about and implemented every single day of the year, not simply on the first day of a year.

Nevertheless, I’m going to be hypocritical and list my aims for 2008, different from others if only because they’re more concrete with actual boundaries and conditions:

  1. Take more care with my sleeping habits, averaging eight hours a night at a minimum.
  2. Catch up with friends at least once a week, even in holiday times when I’m working seven days a week.
  3. Add on an extra hour’s worth of cleaning and maintenance around the house each week to the (average) three hours I currently do.
  4. Be more careful with my money, buying less clothes and accessories. Save 60%-70%, rather than 40%-50% of my weekly income, in order to have more money to spend on holidays (New Zealand in February, China in December-January).
  5. Along the same lines, spend less time spending on eBay, and more time selling unused/unwanted items. A ratio of 20%-80% would be ideal, with the 20% on cheap movie tickets and Buffy box sets.
  6. Change my style of alcohol intake. Rather than binging and overindulging on weekends with friends, a goblet of white or red every two days is a healthier option.
  7. Do one good deed a day, no matter how insignificant.
  8. Work on developing a few how-to articles suitable for publication in lifestyle magazines and/or Playboy.
  9. Apply to be accepted into a Grad.Dip in Politics and/or Management for the beginning of 2009, after I finish my degree this year.
  10. …actually finish my degree this year, ideally with marks maintained at a Distinction or above.

Whether or not these resolutions will be kept is another matter. They are made with every intention of actually actioning them rather than simply talking about it however, so there’s a modicum of hope!

  1. Like you, I should also spend more time cleaning. Getting lazy is such an easy habit for me to get into with NOT cleaning. It’s easy to pick up after myself, I just have to DO it.

  2. Happy New Year! There’s still a couple hours left for us North Americans. I usually make resolutions and forget about them within a few weeks, but hopefully this year will be different! I might just steal 1, 4, and 7 from you. :D

  4. Degree in Commerce that you talked about at the meet-up is off the agenda, then? Even though you did say maybe and I’m just being anal. :P

Sound resolutions, Manda, sound resolutions. Best of luck with them! I always make a few vague ones and then either drag their arses across the finish line barely alive by the end of the year, or just abandon them four days in. :D This year, though …

  5. Cleaning? I can’t ever be that neat, and I usually leave that to the end of the term / year or the new year :P

Good luck with your resolutions and I hope you can fulfill it (I doubt I could do mine) :P

  6. I don’t believe in new years resolutions either, I just try to change things when I feel they need to be changed. Good luck with completely your goals and aims though :) and of course; happy new year!

  9. Hope you had a fantastic New Years celebrations (I know I did!), and it’s really cool to see such a good list – instead of just putting “Spend less”, you’ve put what you’ll spend any money saved on, and how you’re going to do it. I really should do the same!

  12. happy new year! you’re resolutions seem very reasonable, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be easy to follow up on, haha., so good luck on them! I never keep resolutions anyway, so I just don’t really bother. I always tell myself what I should/want to do anyway. Hope your 2008 will be awesome and that’s you’ll achieve all you want =)
