New Leadership

November 25, 2007 | Filed under Politics

After eleven long years under the Howard Government, which consistently trumpets their excellent economics policy and the benefits that Australian families enjoy under their governance (what, rising house prices and inadequate public facilities? a racist, homogenised society?), a new dawn has arrived. Kevin Rudd and the Labor Party will be governing Australia.

I’m proud to say I did my bit as well, voting yesterday afternoon. Courtesy of our recent move, I was actually voting for the first time in an electorate which has the potential to swing towards either of the two larger political parties. For the first time in my life, my vote actually meant something (and did, with a Labor win). The electorate in which I used to live (yes Jess, me too!) is predominantly Liberal, with Peter Costello as the candidate, so really, my working class vote had no impact.

As usual, Greens leader Bob Brown put it best:

Welcome Kevin Rudd, new prime minister of Australia. This is a remarkable night for the Australian people, for a new era for this country – to tackle climate change, to tackle social inequality and to give this country back the pride that it is socially just, outward looking, and cares for the environment and the lifestyle of our grandchildren.

Welcome Kevin Rudd. May you turn this country into the socially progressive society it has the potential to be.

  1. Elections only seem exciting when they happen where I live :P

  2. Now that Kevin Rudd is the PM of Australia, I have absolutely no problem with becoming the seventh state of Australia.

Reply: Okay, best comment ever. :P

  3. ^Lol Nellie!
Yay for Rudd, I was actually going to blog about this but had nothing really interesting to say other than “KEVIN 07!”

I went to vote and apparently I wasn’t registered/enrolled for my area even though I have voted before. So I had to do an “away” vote for the Pilbara area.

I just hope Kevin is genuine and didn’t use all the lie tactics most parties do to get in. I think he will be, and I respect him, but then I worry what if…

  4. Hah, next election I’ll be able to vote in an election at which my vote won’t have an impact! I’m looking forward to it…

  5. I’m really happy about Kevin Rudd winning. :D It’s about time things started changing around here!

  6. I think it’s great that Labor won and that John Howard got the metaphorical boot in the worst possible way. Hopefully though, Rudd follows through.

  7. It’s refreshing to know that there’s a new government, rather than the same old that was the Howard government. It’s nice knowing your vote counts for once- my electorate swung too.

And there really wasn’t anything saucy about my yes/no situation…except it might lead to a lack of saucy situations in the future, which isn’t so good :)

  8. I’m really happy to read you used your right to vote, it’s saddening to see how many people let that right go to waste because they can’t be bothered or because they aren’t interested in politics.

  9. Day by day, Labour (give or take a ‘u’) conquering the world. I like it. :)

  10. Howard had his time, now it’s Rudd’s. I’m happy to see Johnny get booted out of parliament entirely; it’s nice to know that the odd 21% interest rate from years ago won’t have a chance.

See ya, Johnny, wouldn’t wanna be ya.

  12. I think I read in an article that Rudd/new Australian Government is going to ratify the Kyoto Protocol.

Way to leave us as the only Developed country who hasn’t taken the plunge. Sure, we were dicks for not ratifying it before, but at least the Aussies were dicks along with us.

*shakes fist at Australia stepping in line with the rest of the world*

Reply: Not only that, but he’s putting money into ensuring that every high school student has access to a home computer, and broadband Internet as well. He looks to the future!

  13. The Howard Government had an excellent economic policy. Let it work itself out, make lots of money, and then throw that money at people to try and get them to vote for you.

  14. Let’s just hope your Labo[u]r are better than ours..
