November 21 2007: Teacher’s Strike

Having the rest of the week off work for various health and fun reasons, I decided to take my brother out of school for today as Victorian teachers were going on strike. My reasoning was simple: if he went to school, he’d be playing games all day; if I took him shopping with me, he could carry my shopping bags.

We started off at my favourite shopping centre: Chadstone, which proudly proclaims itself as the Fashion Capital of Australia. Today was VIP day – all stores had discounts ranging from a negligible 10% to a mind-blowing 50%. However…I bought nothing. Strange isn’t it, when you’re used to getting 75%+ discounts on what you buy, you virtually ignore anything that isn’t discounted as heavily? I don’t think I’ve bought anything at full price for years.

With Chadstone a bust, we went onto our local Direct Factory Outlet. And there…I hit the jackpot! I’d been lacking the accessories to wear with my party dress on this coming Friday, and was in a state of total and utter despair. At DFO though, I found everything I needed to complete the outfit:

bracelet clutch shoes

And so, dress and accessories combined, I have a birthday outfit that cost $100. Dress was $49.95 (originally $99.95 from Seduce), shoes were $29.95 (originally $89.95 by Zensu), clutch bag was $14.95 (originally $39.95 by Kate Hill), bracelet was $4.95 (originally $19.95 by Ritual). I’m still contemplating how to do my hair and makeup, but have some tentative plans for that (you know how department stores have makeup counters that do makeovers? I’ll probably get that done).

And just think, if I hadn’t taken my brother out of school, I’d have had to carry all those the bags myself. Many thanks, Victorian teachers!

  1. Now I cannot stop thinking of your brother being similar to Ugly Betty’s brother.

He must either really love you or not mind the whole shopping deal.

Reply: It’s all about training them from a young age. :)

  2. My mom is really into unions (especially teacher’s unions), and I’ve always hoped to have a strike at school because I would be forbidden from crossing the line. Unfortunately, I have never had the opportunity.

Now that I think about it, I’ve never actually crossed a line. Huh.

  3. Right. That’s it. We’re going shopping when you get to Sydney, masterful Jedi(ess) and I’m going to learn how to bargain, damnit! Fun.

    Very nice range there, Manduh.

  4. Nellie — I was thinking exactly the same! Are you sure his name isn’t ‘Justin’, Amanda? Because I’ve always wished my brother would be like that. Obstinate little boy just wants to play with his cars though. :P

    I love those shoes.

  5. I love the shoes, I love the shoes….

How do you manage to get your brother to do things for you? I mean, you kind of used him like a ball-boy, if you know what I mean (I can’t find the right word in English right now).

Would you mind taking a picture of your shoe collection? I’m intrigued… :)

  6. Woah that bracelet is gorgeous. You’re going to look rockin!

I’d do the same thing with my brother… except he’s too old and would tell me to carry my own f***ing bags. I love him. :D

  8. How did you get him to go? If given the choice between games and shopping, I know what my brothers would pick…
