Review: Nanny McPhee (2005)

As I hadn’t read the novel (I know, shame on me), I went into this movie with no expectations whatsoever, save the expectation that I would drool all over Colin Firth, and thus have to strip him of his drool-soaked clothes and have my wicked way with him…multiple times. Unfortunately, aside from the drooling, this didn’t happen.

Colin Firth and his super-sperm aside (c’mon, the movie claims the guy supposedly had seven kids within ten years. He has super sperm!), the movie itself was thoroughly enjoyable. Very family-oriented of course, with the subtle (like a brick to the face) warning to children that if they misbehave, they will be punished by a witch…but enjoyable nonetheless.

There were plotholes left, right and centre (Why was Nanny McPhee’s miraculous disappearing warts never explained? Why did the children only have a silver rattle as a memento of their deceased mother? Had she never taken a photo, or even left behind a hairbrush?), but I’ve no doubt that most members of a family would enjoy the film, provided they suspend all belief and retreat into the wonder of childhood.

Emma Thompson’s makeup was very well done (making a beautiful English rose like Thompson into an old crone takes some talent!), though I didn’t see the point in making her figure entirely A-line with a voluminous waist and hips. It was incredibly exaggerated and definitely unbelievable, deflecting attention from the powerful performance, to the ludicrous appearance.

It was humourous as well, with the sudden magical appearances of Nanny McPhee and her tagline ‘I did knock’ guaranteed to get a sniggle from the audience. There was incredibly sophisticated lustful humour in the film as well, no doubt targeted at the parents who accompany their children to the film.

All in all, I’d recommend a viewing of this movie for all Colin Firth fans. A little bit of Firth goes a long way.

  1. I saw this the day it came out with my little sister as it was her birthday and I said she could choose any movie. I enjoyed it, even if it was made for kids I thought it was good. It’s been a while since I have seen it so I can’t remember Colin Firth in it.

  3. I’ve seen this movie like 20 times on HBO and I love it. It’s cute, fun and frivolous plus the hotness that is Colin Firth is just a nice nice bonus :D

  4. We bought this… last year? Or perhaps early this year, I cannot remember! It’s a real family favourite though. Some parts are very sexually suggestive though, so much so that I actually blushed. :P

  5. *goes to get her paws on it* I so wanted to view it, but they don’t show such old films in theaters here, TV… too many advertisements, and the DVD is still so expensive. others had their price lowered for ages XP – so… you get the gist.

  6. Awh, I didn’t pick up on the loopholes. Then again I always brush them aside when it comes to kids films unless they’re smacking me in the face… Spiderman…
What’s Colin Firth’s appeal? I find him goofy looking :o *is maimed*

Reply: I’ve lost all faith in you!

  7. I have never seen the movie, but from the ads/posters etc, I thought Colin Firth looked “blah” in it! (I should have more faith in him, I know!) Might check it out next time it’s on TV or something ;)
