November 8 2007: If The Sun Were To Die
I find it slightly depressing that if the sun was to suddenly die, it would be at least eight minutes before any of us here on Earth realised. For all you know, the sun could have just died, and we have only a few minutes left to enjoy the sun. And where are we all? Cooped up inside on the computer, pallid faces lacking a sun-kissed glow…forever lacking?
We’ll be doomed to live the rest of our lives without natural light. The natural world and ecosystems would collapse, and with it, life as we know it. Can you imagine living in an entirely synthetic world without ever knowing the pleasure of smelling a rose? Of running through fields of wildflowers? Of breathing natural oxygen created by plants? Having a life reduced to nothing more than the act of eating, drinking, breathing, and sleeping without the simple pleasures of nature?
…I have a talent for cheering people up with fun facts.

Except for the fact that experiencing that sun-less world is far from possible … (It’s more possible that we all die because of the intense could that it would bring.) Still, should it be like you described … I’d hope the sun blasts us all into oblivion instead, so I wouldn’t have to suffer from such a depressing world … I’m rambling =P

Well, it’s been said the suns is going to day in a gazillion years. I doubt we humans and all the other species would experience that. Maybe aliens would?
At the step we’re going now, I doubt there’ll be any “life as we know” it in what? 500 years?
No ozone, global warming, polluted air, contaminated water, extincted species…we’re destroying everything now. I don’t think if the sun does die, it’d affect us at all. We pretty much had already killed ourselves and all life along with us.
Completely unfair to the species that live in this planet, I must say. We humans are a bad fuck.

Well a lot of the star light we see at night come from stars so many thousands of light years away that by the time we’ve seen the light, the star IS probably dead. Sure they don’t sustain us, but perhaps they have their own planets and life that depended on their light?

One friend of mine always cheers me up the way you do with this blog-post here so I’m quite used to it. It is, however, a very scary thought.
But if the sun would die we would notice since it will get bigger and bigger before eventually fading away.
Sadly, we probably have killed ourselves before then… :P
I find comfort in my belief of Gods existence

Die, as in just completely stop, or die as in supernova blast WHEEE!!! Because I love explosions! XD

well as a bio major I kinda already knew that..not fun! what’s more important is the amount of waste we humans are producing. We’re changing the environment much faster than it’s suppose too. an average person driving a car produces roughly 10,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per 10,000 miles driven.

Ooor…we could send off a giant bomb to restart the sun. Because, apparently, bombs solve all astronomic crises. *nod*

As long as you don’t plan on being alive in 5 billion years it shouldn’t be too much of a problem for you personally. ;)
For some reason though, I still find it incredibly sad that stars, planets, etc. will die at all, whether I’m around or not. Maybe it just feels like something like that should be preserved. I’m not entirely sure.

I’d rather die pasty when the sun dies than die before the sun dies because of skin cancer…
Nellie on November 9 2007 #
I just realised that sentence made it look like I was saying the sun is going to die of skin cancer.
I meant me.

Yeah, Amanda, you really do. I’m suddenly filled with a rather terrible fear of there not being a proper morning tomorrow. That really would be awful…

Good thing I went outside and walked through the grass today then :P

Wouldn’t the sun dying out mean no energy whatsoever? Humans would die out, too!
Anyway, I think it’s the least of your worries. Maybe you should think about what would happen if someone threw a rock at your head. Better wear a helmet all the time, just in case! (At least it’s something you can somewhat protect yourself from…)

You know what I was told? If the sun would die, it would go supernova first… in which case we would die before we would get the opportunity to live without sunshine. The radiation would swallow the earth whole. Yay! More depressing stuff! I’m under the impression that by the time the sun does goes out, we will have already killed ourselves.

When that happens, I’ll retreat to my underground laboratory and continue developing my artificial sun. Bwahaha and my last name is Sun.
I’m actually looking forward to Ice Age…

That made my day. I can now picture myself sitting frozen and pallid in front of my computer for all eternity–in total darkness. Oh sci fi movies have warped my mind.

This post makes me want to go hug the sun. Except I can’t. =/
Kycoo on November 9 2007 #
Silly Amanda. Before the sun actually dies, it will expand and engulf the Earth, killing us all. So, we don’t need to worry about any of this. :)
Josh on November 9 2007 #
Um, the sun is going to incinerate us all before it dies out. You don’t want to be around for the incineration. I’d prefer a pasty face to being reduce to a pile of ashes.
