October 31 2007: Revealing My Arms

It seems as though blotchy, bruised, and swollen arms can be connotative of numerous body-marking activities, if the responses to my last post are any indication. The guesses could have all been correct, yet only one could be the true winner. But before I reveal what it is, a quick summary of what it is not:

Carpet burn resulting from rough sex involving bondage, as suggested by Tracey, Kimmie, Xuan, Chantelle and Juice. A lovely guess, and under other circumstances, would have an 80% chance of being the answer. However, like I mentioned in my second last entry, it’s been awhile since I’ve been penetrated by anything other than an inanimate, yet vibrating, object. Unfortunately. Very unfortunately.

With this in mind, too much masturbation, as suggested by Aisling is a distinct possibility. However…unless I was a squirter and squirted all over my arms whilst in the midst of doing my own business to myself, how would I have a rash up on my forearms? If anything, it would be on my fingers, palms, and inner thighs, and according to the photo, they’re clear (though, there isn’t visual evidence that my inner thighs are clear…)!

Allergic Reaction to climate changes and/or environmental factors and/or the trial of a new skincare product, as suggested by Rachael, Belinda, Jennifer, Nellie, Chantelle. An extremely logical assumption – that would be how most people get rashes. However, living in Melbourne, the city of four seasons in a day, I’ve become accustomed to quick changes in climate. I also haven’t tried any new products, nor is it a result of swimming on Monday, nor is it a result of spending too much time typing on the laptop (my arms are accustomed to extended periods of laptop use!). Great guesses, but no cheese.

Side-effects from hair removal as suggested by Vera, Jennifer and Kaylee. You guys get prizes simply for remembering that I blogged about IPL hair removal back in January. However, if you had remembered the entry in its entirety, you would have realised that my sessions of IPL were conducted over five months, and thus would have been completed in May/June as I blogged about it in January. So it’s a great guess, but you’re about four months too late.

Physical (child) abuse, as suggested by Amber and Rilla. Am I supposed to be the victim or the aggressor? In any case, my arm isn’t the result of physical abuse, though I do beat my brother daily with a wooden stick, and lock him into dark closets regularly. Largely because the little brat just won’t behave, and bribing him with ice-cream won’t do the job.

The above? All wrong. Very well guessed, but wrong. In the end, there can only be one winner, and that winner is Chanel. Volleyball is the culprit.

I’ve just joined a social volleyball group – they meet every Tuesday night for one and a half hours of volleyball drills. We do digging and setting drills, serving drills, muscle stretching, jogging and endurance tests, and finish with a quick six-on-six game. It’s very intense, and extremely physical, which the dark bruising on my arms can attest to. I’ll probably be attending every two or three weeks – there’s no requirement to be there every week, and by going once a fortnight, it’ll allow the swelling and bruising to go down before I build it up again with another session.

But look! Exercise!

  1. Congratulations Chanel!

Exercise is always fun when it doesn’t result in injury.

  2. *ponders* Last time I played volleyball extensively was… over a year ago. The only effect were reddened wrists… so I guess that depends on the person. I managed to avoid bruising my arms :P

As for the hair removal… meh! I don’t remember you having blogged about actually doing it. So I assumed you didn’t do it in the end. Or well… my memory is really not that good, and I didn’t go back to see them.

Congrats to Channel! I’d have never guessed it was from volleyball.

  3. Wow! I seriously thought it was sex-related hahaha. But good way to keep us guessing, I forgot that the first time I played volleyball my arms became bluish as well. Haha. Congrats to Chanel! :D

  4. … damn. Maybe I should try and think outside the square one of these days. Hahah. So you don’t get along well with ball sports, Amanda? :P

Congratulations to Chanel! I honestly never would’ve guessed.

  5. Wow, Chanel has amazing guessing skills! I’m impressed.

Ugh. Volleyball. My least favourite sport for that exact reason- it hurts my arms!

  6. Hooray for Chanel! :P

Eh, I’ve always sucked at volleyball, hated that game. Still, nice to hear that you like it! :)

  7. We don’t do volleyball over here very often; I always associate it with the beaches of Australia. Personally I think my guess was the best.

    But then I would. ;)

  8. I don’t really like Volleybal for that particular reason :P It always hurts SO much :P

  9. Well, I’ve been playing volleyball for almost 8 years now, but I’ve never seen an injury likes yours. When I started, my forearms use to get a little red, but after a while, it was normal. And it doesn’t hurt anymore (which is probably the consequence of playing every day).

However, I constantly get bruises on my knees, elbows and in the area where my hip bone sticks out.

  10. Mwhahaha, victory is mine!

Congrats on starting volleyball – It’s a great sport (the only one I could ever do) and great exercise, even if its killer on your arms!

If you haven’t already noticed, the bruising will turn purple (just the individual spots, not your whole arm)… It’s really quite a sight. :) But eventually your body gets used to it.

  11. Ouch! Painful! But exercise is good! :P

  12. Volleyball is brutal. I duck whenever the ball comes close. I would have failed that portion of gym if my team members weren’t so amazing.

    Kaylee on November 1 2007 #

  13. Ah, volleyball. I was always too short to do anything of much use. :D

I hope your arms don’t stay bruised for too long. =/

  14. I always hated volleyball. It did that to my arms too and stung like a bitch.

    Britney on November 1 2007 #

  15. Why did I not remember?! My arms always ended up that way from volleyball before.

    Rilla on November 1 2007 #

  16. Ah, I LOVE Volleyball. I played years ago, unfortunately my whole knee ripped apart whilst playing once and I haven’t played since :( I miss it.
