October 29 2007: QOTW: It’s Been A Long Time

Today, I spent two hours doing something I haven’t done for a very long time - and as a result of this activity, my joints are aching as they have never ached before.

Get your mind out of the gutter you dirty person! I’m not referring to sexual activity (though really, it’s been awhile…), but rather, the much more innocent act of swimming. It’s been at least two years since I was last at the pool for the express purpose of doing some laps. While I do own a few pairs of bathers, they’re largely for the days when I prance around the beach, checking out semi-naked surfers.

I swam for approximately two hours - doing about a hundred laps of a twenty-five metre pool. That’s two and a half kilometres - you have to admit it’s pretty impressive for someone who hasn’t swum for two years. That’s burning approximately 3000 kilojoules per session, firming flesh at the rate of .3218% an hour (random made-up numbers, work with it), and dropping dress sizes at the rate of one a year. (Note: not losing weight {I like what I weigh!}, just firming flesh and compacting flab into toned muscle.)

Hopefully this will become a weekly event - I’ve purchased a fifty-pass card (coming in at $2.70 per visit, rather than the $3.70 for a single visit), so the very fact I’ve already shelled out the money in advance is likely to help. I’m not called Miss Stingy Arsechops for nothing, I like to get my money’s worth!

And since it’s been such an abominably long time since the last Question of the Week due to my absence from the interwebs…

Question of the Week: Is there something you haven’t done for a long time which you really should start doing again?

ETA: Just upgraded to WordPress 2.3.1 (from 2.2.something) so if you see any bugs, let me know.

  1. Hmm..certainly a few things that could be R rated, so I’ll leave it there…

    -studying for my exams
    -taekwondo

Hmmm…nah not very exciting…I do work out 7 days a week, I work 6 days a week and I’m pretty healthy. I really don’t know. Interesting question, though!!

    Have a nice day, Amanda!

  2. I really should start to swim again as well.. It’s just that the nearest decent pool is about 8 kilometres from my house, and I’m a lazy person.. ;) Also, I don’t really have the time xD

  3. I need to do stomach crunches again. Lots of it.

  4. I went swimming for the first time in years just a few weeks ago (lap swimming - not lake swimming) and the lover and I are going tonight at 9pm again. And I need to keep at it! It’s so good for the body :)

  5. Swimming, actually.

Unfortunately, I’m waiting for my cousins to make their pool work because I dislike going to public pools now … I hate my body and don’t really like it being in show.

Especially when I only have my nine year old bathing suit. Perhaps a new one that doesn’t make me uncomfortable could push me into the pool. Embarrassing, I know. I’ve somewhat filled out, too, so my breasts are incredibly annoying. :P

  6. I wish I was still drawing as often as I used to, that I was still passionate about it, and that I wasn’t so apathetic to the notion that it (that is, talent - assuming I had any) might be slipping away from me. Alas, school and love, and everything in between has taken over, and drawing has slipped out of the love category.

  7. My homework ;)

I really should go swimming again, too. A membership at the gym/pool would definitely motivate me as well!

  8. Either working out in general (like weight training) or writing. I haven’t sat down and churned something out for myself in such a long time, and I’m getting a bit depressed…

I’m impressed with your swimming accomplishments. :D I always lose interest in swimming if I do nothing but laps for too long.

  9. Wow, you just reminded me. I haven’t gone swimming for years, unless you count sunbathing and checking out hot guys at the pool. ;)

I should probably start running again. Except no one will join me, and it is so tedious running alone!

  10. I used to swim quite a bit a few years back. Then I went back to swim once this year and couldn’t last more than 2 laps. XP Wow. Flabs > toned muscle? I should be getting into it! But the problem when I went swimming again last time was that my swim gear was coming loose and seriously they were falling off while I was in the water.

I need to get back to gym workouts…

  11. I should start exercising again. I haven’t in over a year. :(

  12. In answering your question, I think I should actually start up cross-training again for dance; I used to jump rope every day and run around the block repeatedly, trying to avoid magpies at specific times of the year, etc. I’ve become so unfit! Stupid academics. My stamina was shot unfairly in the arse when senior schooling started … oh, and maybe practising dances daily like I promised myself two years ago …

OR. Writing for leisure. Just thought of that, actually … okay. Let’s just say anything for leisure. XD

Have fun with the swimming, Amanda! :)

  13. Swimming, the same as you. It wasn’t two years but it surely was at least six months since I got a proper swim. There is no pool in our town, which makes me angry. =(
