September 4 2007: A Dose Of Motivation, S’il Vous Plait

I am still yet to start several essays, or, even to start research1. Hmph. They are due on Monday of next week, yet I seem to be breezing through my days, studiously avoiding study (hah!), whilst wasting time on the Internet and reading mother’s literature of philandering husbands, toilet-training toddlers, and ex-boyfriends that turn up and remind our middle-aged heroine how carefree she once was. Let’s hope a sudden dose of inspiration and motivation strikes before the weekend.

On a more positive note, I’ve made it into the second round of interviews for a summer internship at a major international company. I didn’t think I’d even make it through the first round, what with my lack of extracurriculars, and lack of academic knowledge and training in the field that I was applying for, but it appears that miracles can happen.

Or, perhaps my cunning ‘embellishments’ in certain parts of my CV piqued their interest. Or, my written skills in the cover letter were simply superb, blowing all other applicants out of the water. Who knows.

1Thanks to the people who’ve emailed me designs, it’s much appreciated! Once I start on the essay and figure out what I’m going to do, I’ll start plugging.

ETA 5th Sep@10.40pm: I’ve pretty much completed one essay! I just have to fix up some citations and write up a bibliography then I’m done with that one, and can get stuck into the one I actually wouldn’t mind writing.

  1. I think it’s just natural to avoid study. I’m with you!

Congrats with the summer internship interview. This “major international company” sounds cools and intimidating at the same time. Good luck getting the actual job.

  2. Maybe you should have some of my motivation. I am totally getting on top of all of my assignment and coding layouts and…

  3. You give hope to us all that don’t have many extra-curricular activities. I should really take some up but… well, it’s hard to juggle all these things at once. Good luck with the next round.

Your mother’s books sound like the type I read. I can’t help myself; it’s a compulsion to read them.

Reply: I should clarify - “mother’s literature” is a play on “chick’s literature”, or chicklit. :P Rather than having a twenty something nubile young’un as the protagonist, the main character’s in “mother’s literature” are harried middle-aged women with stretch marks and a station wagon. :P

  4. Hee, I always work last-minute! I don’t recommend it though, bouts of intense stress is pretty horrible.

And congrats on the interviews!! I got heaps of rejections for a number of clerkships I applied too, quite depressing really. I hope you get in! I wish I know how to embellish MY resume!

  6. Don’t worry there’s still time to do everything (the procrastinator’s mantra :P). For some reason, getting started on essays is a lot less appealing than “wasting” time…
