August 28 2007: Last-Ditch Effort

Filed under Uni/Work with 6 Comments

After coming to the realisation that my non-academic/money-related extracurricular activities are woefully few and far-between (i.e. none whatsoever), I’ve decided to be pro-active about expanding the range of activities and achievements that I’ll be able to list on my CV.

As such, I am now officially a participant in my university’s “Language Exchange” program, where I spend up to two hours each week with someone of mainland Chinese origin (e.g. a foreign exchange student who’s only just moved to Australia, as opposed to a white-washed devil of a Chinese girl like myself). I help them with their English, they help me with my Chinese. It’s a win-win situation. Additionally, as of February next year, I’ll also officially be a Senior Mentor to new foreign students - organising get togethers and other activities to help them acclimatise to living in Melbourne.

A friend (she may get to this blog through my Facebook profile…I don’t know) is also going to introduce me to a tutoring/homework help program, whereby us university students help high schoolers from disadvantaged backgrounds with their homework, improving study skills and the like. I may even see if I can join my cousin’s volleyball group on Thursday nights, and am considering starting up a student group on campus next year (the focus of the group is yet to be decided…I just like the idea of being able to put “President of XYZ society” on my CV).

This may be a last-ditch effort to improve future job prospects as employers like candidates with extracurricular interests and proven leadership skills, but hey. A last-ditch effort is better than no effort at all.

August 27 2007: QOTW: A Lack Of Shame

Filed under Family & Q.O.T.W. with 18 Comments

So it turns out that I’ll probably become one of those parents that inevitably embarass their children in any social situation. Whilst waiting for the bus today with my younger brother, I’m plugged into my iPod as usual, and singing along softly.

“Stop it,” he hisses to me.

Oblivious, I continue singing.

“Stop it,” he repeats, poking me hard this time. “People are staring, you’re drawing attention to yourself.”

I stare at him. “And the problem is…”

A lack of social awareness perhaps? Immunity from feeling shame and embarassment? Or simply a desire to make my brother cringe with embarassment? He has a long way to go before he learns that people’s opinions don’t matter, and that the important thing is to feel comfortable in one’s own skin.

Question of the Week: Are you often embarrassed to be in out in public with a member of your family, or are you the one that embarrasses them?

August 26 2007: A Request

Filed under Online & Uni/Work with 11 Comments

One of the questions of the three essays I have coming up (unsurprisingly, none of which I’ve actually started) is “What is the act of creation?” The answer can be in reference to the concept of creation in any field - to make it easier on myself I’ve decided to concentrate on the field of web design.

And thus, I have a request to make of all the web designers out there. If you’re the type who does physical sketches on paper of potential new designs, can you please contact me? I need to follow the “act of creation” from start to finish, and thus I’d need photos/scans of pencil on paper sketches, and screencaps of the designing process (from rough sketches in Photoshop through the adding of more developed elements, to coding and the final product).

There is a deadline to the essay (it’s due on September 10), so if you have time to do this for me within a week, please let me know!

ETA: And, I’ll even throw in two consecutive weeks of plugging the donator in every entry. I blog daily, so that’s fourteen links back to your site(s)!
