August 31 2007: A Tapeworm

On a cool autumn morning, a seventeen-year-old schoolgirl suddenly fainted, and fell down two flights of stairs. Upon arrival at the hospital, the doctors realised that her bloodwork was irregular, and in fact, her immune system was compromised, and she needed to be isolated in a clean room. Awakening from her medically induced coma a week later, she found a doctor standing next to her bed, a tube in her throat, a patch on her back from a lumbar puncture, and her legs paralysed.

“We don’t know what’s wrong with you,” he said.

“I ate some bad ham,” she replied.

“Aha!” he shouted. “Tapeworm! Quick, medical lackey with fantastic hair, order an MRI!”

The doctors found the worm at the base of her spinal column. With it removed, the girl recovered rapidly, and upon checking out of the hospital, was asked out on a date by her supervising doctor.

Then they lived happily ever after.

That was the dream I had last night. The girl was me, and House was my doctor. It was so exceeding vivid that I can still feel the tapeworm in my spine, and his hands on me (whaaaaaaat?).

  1. I’ve told you before Amanda, the tapeworm diet just isn’t worth it!

  2. Only you could turn a tragic dream into that ending! You know that, right? I can’t talk though — I seem to be having increasing numbers of Harry Potter dreams.

  5. I had a House-related dream today too. Probably because I watched 6 episodes or so before I fell asleep yesterday. :)

  7. Ha! That’s a great dream. I still don’t think it’s as good as my dream about George Bush killing my grandad…:-)

  8. I knew a girl in elementary school that had a tapeworm removed.

    I think I’ve just lost my appetite…

  9. Hurls.

Tapeworms both fascinate me and utterly disgust me at the same time. I often have this strange urge to slice them open and examine their innards - but don’t act on those strange urge for obvious reasons.

A tapeworm in your spine is definitely top rate nightmare material. :(
