July 15 2007: Huge Black Crow

So, a bird landed on my head today.

Let me rephrase that: A huge black crow landed on my head today.

And again: A huge motherfucker of a black crow landed on my head today on the way to work.

And once more: A huge motherfucker of a black crow landed on my head today on the way to work and I panicked, thinking that du Maurier’s prophecy had come true.

I almost pissed my pants (though I was wearing a dress) with fear. That shit ain’t right.

  3. …that is incredibly freaky. I’m scared when I see a bunch of birds fly around me, let alone one land on my head. Definitely scary…is it bad if I laughed though?

  7. Oh man that would have been freaky, I like crows though most are scared of them. I once had a willy-wagtail try and swoop on me and he pecked my head.

  9. Did your head have landing lights or something? Of course, it could have been looking for a mate or something. >:]

  12. how downright scary!!

I feel cool because I’ve actually read the story of the birds, not just seen the movie.

I can’t believe it landed on you.

  13. Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” was such a freaky movie! I hate birds. A pigeon is bad enough but a crow too! Poor you. *pat pat*

  14. Nobody believes me when I say crows are evil and vicious - until they get dive bombed by one.

I’ve heard (and seen) many “crow landing on person’s head” stories. It’s not as uncommon as people think! I even could’ve had a similar experience, except I ducked in time. :P

  15. A bird never landed on my head, but believe me if it did I’d never leave the house again. I’d be horrified.

Btw, where do you go out in Melbourne? I just spent another weekend in Melbourne, we went to a place called Mother’s Milk in Prahran… I liked the stuff in Brunswick St. better though!

  21. Well, what happened AFTER it landed? Did it stay long? Did you say hi? Were you in the middle of people? If so, did they laugh or feel sorry for you? Did you make it to work or did you stand/sit there horrified until you calmed down? You skipped half the story!

    XP

Reply: It was nine o’clock on a Sunday morning! Half of Melbourne was still in bed - I was pretty much alone, and due to my awesome skillz0rz, picked myself up and kept going. Bravery FTW!

  22. Well, actually… that is not a new idea. Scary as it is, this percfectly personifies the truth about the mental illness & the difference between mind & soul & the seemingly abstract from the real. Believe me… I am no expert on real. But the idea of the crow signifies wisdom & the her dark nature. The idea of crows & their symbol of prophecy is very real. Not illusional at all. Maybe if you tried to accept that you might feel a little better about the truth of that prophecy/beliefs.

To me… mental illness is like a sunshower. It’s still a nice day, but it’s raining. Same as the crow… it is seeming scary… it signifies a type of death… not the death that kills… but the death that changes you & help you realise who you are. THAT can be scary. It IS.

Think of it as a dove in disguise maybe.

No patronism there. It is a real concept. That is like saying that when things seem dark & horrible there is always that glimmer of hope in what we though
would be terrifying to us… if we need it. If we see it…

We could understand it too. Not as delusional but as a basic truth.

Reply: Thank you for your most enlightened insight. :) I especially like the part where you mentioned mental illness and insinuated that I might have one. Thank you very much.
