June 27 2007: OH THE IRONY

Filed under Life & Politics with 9 Comments

Walking into uni early this morning (I was picking up some essays post-exam), I pass a guy putting flyers onto car windshields, securing them in place with the windshield wipers. As I pass him, he hands me one of the A4 flyers.

The flyer is advertising and campaigning for human reaction to climate change, conserving the environment, etc. It’s extolling the benefits of changing driving habits, water usage habits, conserving energy, etc.

I immediately double back, and ask him, “How many of these have you handed out?”

“I photocopied 500!” he says proudly. “I only have half of them left to give out!”

I pause. “So…you basically killed one tree to print off 500 flyers that people are just going to throw in the bin anyway?”

OH THE IRONY.

It would have been so much easier, and so much more environmentally friendly for him to simply ask the IT department of the university to send out a mass email to all staff and students about saving the environment. The Internet saves the planet people! Don’t you forget that!

June 26 2007: Men In Uniform

While a couple of family friends are out of town, I’m looking after their house. Collecting mail, pushing garbage bins out to the curb for the garbage truck etc. It’s been pretty breezy and easy work for the past week or so - I just drop by their house on my way home from work. However…imagine my surprise when I get there this afternoon to collect the bins, only to find that the garbage bin isn’t there. It’s gone. It’s disappeared. It’s been stolen. Whatever the fate of the bin is, one thing is clear - I’ve just officially been handed my big challenge as a house-sitter.

I flounder about uselessly for a few minutes - walking ineffectually up and down the street in search of the renegade bin. It’s nowhere to be seen so I decide to go by the police station to report a missing bin.

I get there. I open the car door. I step out. I go into the police station. I’m in heaven. Buff men in uniform? I try hard to contain my drooling. I simper and flutter my eyelashes at the officer who comes over to take the details down. He is certifiably drop dead gorgeous - all big and bulky and muscles and blond and tanned and *falls over*. Let’s just say that he can put me in handcuffs anytime he wants…and throw away the key!

And if you think that was TMI, imagine what happens when I walk into a group of firefighters.

June 25 2007: QOTW: Lolita

Recently, I spent a night with a new acquaintance, who is fast becoming one of my favourite people. Somehow, after an evening of studying history and pr0n, we started talking about books and literature, because as you know, pr0n and literature is so inextricably linked. I ask him what book he’s currently reading.

He replies, “A book called ‘Lolita’”.

“Ah,” I nod sagely. “Nabokov. Nice choice.”

He stares. “That’s…really impressive. No one else I know would have known what book I was talking about off the top of their head the way you did.”

I shrug, modest as always.

He mentions that he just finished Dostoyevsky’s ‘Crime And Punishment’. We spend awhile talking about the characterisation of Raskolnikov. I recommend ‘The Gambler’ to him as a better display of Dostoyevsky’s skill. He thanks me for the recommendation and in turn, suggests that I try some plays rather than novels, with ‘Three Sisters’ a recommendation.

Shared love for dead Russian guys aside? I think I’ve finally found someone who shares my enthusiasm for the more obscure things in life. I can actually talk about books with him, because unlike everyone else I know, he actually reads books that most people gloss over for fear of being exposed to something as horrid as a drunken Russian university student or a paedophile. So…

Question Of The Week: Have you ever met someone where after only a few minutes together, you knew that there would be a common bond bringing you two together for quite some time yet?
